We seem to have shifted our approach from expensive flops to finding bargains, much in the way Southampton appear to have done with striker Graziano Pelle, an Italian bought from Feyenoord in Holland.

Another player we reported to be keeping an eye on is 25-year-old Cagliari player Albin Ekdal, who it is suggested in certain quarters is a striker. He is actually listed as a central midfielder with secondary options as a supporting striker or right winger.

This season in Serie A the Swedish international has scored 4 goals in 9 games, however he scored a hat-trick against Inter Milan so has only scored in 2 games. Last season he scored 1 goal in 22 Serie A games with no assists.

He has played 8 times for his country and never scored so he is definitely more of a midfielder than an out and out striker. He has blocks and interceptions to his name which suggest he is comfortable defending. I don't know the player but the impression is of a defensive midfielder or a box-to-box Ryan Mason type, although maybe he has been moved into a Christian Eriksen type role this season, but then he has no assists.

Italian news outlet Sportmediaset report that Franco Baldini has asked Cagliari to keep him posted on the Swedes situation. The Italian club want to start contract talks however with the players contract running out in 2016.

The players agent, Martin Klette, believes his client is ready for the next step in his career which suggests he is seeking a move to a bigger club.

"Albin is ready for the next step. Until then he will do his best for Cagliari, as he has done in recent years."
