Another 27-year-old we are being linked with because the press determine we need as striker is Sebastian Giovinco. He'll be 28 in January and is said to be unhappy he isn't getting many starts at Juventus. His contract ends next summer so he is another player who can arrange a move for himself in January. Looking at his injury record he missed just 6 games last season and 4 the season before so that isn't an issue.

He hasn't played in the two Serie A games this season and while his statistics say 17 league appearances he didn't play a single game for 90 minutes. His substitute appearances included 1 minute, 11, 11, 8, 5, 1 and 4 minutes. That's 7 out of 17 appearances and he hasn't even played half a game of football yet, just 41 minutes. In every competition he played 90 minutes just once the whole season. Hardly surprising he is not happy.

I see the Independent on Sunday say Franco Baldini's position is not under threat, he is not facing the axe. I reported at the time it was nonsense and simply showed a lack of understanding by the sensationalist popular press. Good to see sanity return.

Thursday will be revealing for Ryan Mason. He picked up an injury prior to the pre-season game against Schalke having impressed on the North American tour. There look to be plenty ahead of him in the pecking order so it will be interesting to see if he is in the side or on the bench. At 23 he needs to start making the breakthrough.

Tottenham player ratings from the Durham Advertiser are well worth a read as they are not made with rose tinted spectacles.

TOTTENHAM (4-2-3-1): Lloris 6; Dier 7, Kaboul 6, Chiriches 5, Rose 8; DEMBELE 9, Capoue 6; Lamela 8, Eriksen 8 (Lennon 86), Chadli 7 (Stambouli 70, 5); Adebayor 7 (Kane 79).

What has happened on this day in our history after our first game today, a 10-0 thrashing of Paddington in 1892, let's see.

In 1997 v Carlisle United Paul Mahorn scored his only goal for the club and goalkeeper Ian Walker made his 200th appearance for us.

In 2005 another goalkeeper, Paul Robinson, made his 50th appearance for us in a Premier League game against Aston Villa.

This game also marked the first time Tottenham had fielded 11 internationals in the starting XI

  1. Paul Robinson (England)
  2. Paul Stalteri (Canada)
  3. Anthony Gardner (England)
  4. Ledley King (England)
  5. Young-Pyo Lee (South Korea)
  6. Teemu Tainio (Finland)
  7. Michael Carrick (England)
  8. Jermaine Jenas (England)
  9. Andy Reid (Republic of Ireland)
  10. Jermain Defoe (England)
  11. Grzegorz Rasiak (Poland)
