One defender out, one defender in

Kyle Naughton overrates his own ability. He is at best an average full-back and would do a job for a team in the lower half of the table. However he is at a club aspiring for the top four each season so is never going to be a first choice right-back.

“I am 25 and there is a stage that you reach when you think, ‘Well, am I going to be No 1? That is what I am looking for. I want to be playing regularly. If I can’t hold down a first-team spot then I do have to look elsewhere. I am not going to lie – I am a right-back. That is the position I want to play in, but it has been difficult with Kyle Walker doing so well.”

Tottenham are likely to let him go for the right price but will have to bear in mind the homegrown contingent for next season.

A departing Naughton would leave Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Aaron Lennon, Andros Townsend, Michael Dawson, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Zeki Fryers, Harry Kane Jordan Archer and Tom Carroll for next season.

There is a growing chorus among Spurs fans to ditch Dawson and Rose, which would only leave the minimum eight.

Personally I'm surprised he has not left before now with no chance of claiming a regular spot. He and Danny Rose may do well at poor clubs but being the best player in relegation sides does not make you a top four player. It seems he hasn't grasped that yet.

Steven Caulker left White Hart Lane for Cardiff City for the same reason, he wanted first team football and was not prepared just to be part of a squad. Had he stayed then he would likely have been a first choice centre-back next season alongside a fit again Younes Kaboul.

However one option could be Manchester City defender Micah Richards. The 25 year-old can play at right-back or centre-back and has only paid 9 Premier League games in the last 2 years. With Vertonghen likely to leave as well he would be a welcome signing for many Spurs fans and would add to the homegrown contingent.

He would certainly be an upgrade on Naughton and has pace so would probably move above Dawson in the pecking order for a centre-back spot. A pairing of Micah Richards and Younes Kaboul certainly looks strong on paper. Manchester City have confirmed that Spurs are interested in him and that the player has all but given up hope of breaking into the first team there.
