I definatelly agree with you THBN. We don't need more midfielders. We already have a lot. I think a second central defender of high class we need more than another midfielder.

So I hope we keep the money and starts the premiership with the current squad we have.

We have enough good players and back up for the season, and we are certainly not lacking in fire power upfront, perhaps use a bit more money to discover and nurture new youngsters for the future and perhaps add an experienced striker up front. We need someone who is experienced and can hold the ball for us, especially if we are winning 2-1 away from home with 5 minutes left. Kanoute, and Mido not the class to do that, Heskey and maybe Hartson, Sutton are of that category

How times have changed for our beloved club... When was the last time we could sit here and discuss the merits of buying a class player. Of course we need class players; even with the number of midfielders we have, we must always look to improve the team.

Maybe Jol thinks JJ is better than Mendes, leaving us with a midfield quartet of Davids, Carrick, Teemu & JJ. Thats one hell of a midfield 4 to choose 2 central midfield spots for. Then sell Mendes, Davis & Brown.

I think Jenas is indeed a quality player and totally agree that selling Brown and Davis and bringing in JJ would be good business! However, if we don't sell 2 of the midfield then there's no pint in going for him. We'll struggle to keep those that we've got happy!

Jol has great judjgement in players and I firmly believe he has 100% backing from everyone connected with the club, but let's not be held to ransom here - JJ is not an 8 million pound player!

I think this guy is an asset if he can grow up a bit and we'd do well to grab him and certainly offload at least a couple of, Davis, Mendes, Brown and maybe Reid. One or more of these are rumoured on their way anyway, Brown to Wigan and Mendes as a possible makeweight for Kuyt.

JJ is better than most of our CMs but only just. I think we have increased our bid to 9.7mil.
We need to sell,but all of them can see the potential in our rebuild and want to stay in case a chance comes up,even if it means spending time in the reserves or on loan.

I agree that dawson is also a good player, but if one or two of our central defenders will be injured we don't have a good replacement, because gardner and naybet are not so good as king. If we wan't to qualify for Champions League we must conceded less goals than last season. And last season king was in defence with naybet/gardner. So we need a very good defender to partner king and as a backup we have than dawson/gardner/naybet. Thant's my opinion

If he is worth 15 mill he must be the barcodes best player and should start every game for them.....he would probably be a bench player at Spurs.

Where is all this criticism of Davis come from? Ok he was injured but he came highly rated and hasn't had a chance to show his worth with a run int he team yet. Most EPL outfits would love to have a midfielder of this quality.

Brown has been a real hard worker, and great servant to the club, running his heart out. If he needs to move on to get first team footie, good luck to him.

As for Jenas I can see him fitting in at LM to give Reid a push. Reid was ok last season but hasn't shone in pre-season and we are clearly lacking pace on the left.

No need to rush though, and to be honest I think we should spend the cash on a better LB than Erik Edman who has looked pretty average.

I think it is a sign of the changes at WHL that the club are now looking to bring in even more quality. Compare JJ to Brown or Crockdavis and I'm sorry, they can both do one. If the club are serious on their European ambitions, I know who I would rather have in the squad.

Jermaine Jenas is a quality box-to-box, very young english midfielder in the style of gerrard. He is obviously not as good but who is. At over 10m he is not worth it, but I would value him at about 8/9/10m. This is because top young players cost this much. He has had 5 years top flight experience already.

Having said this we are well covered in the center mid area. If we get rid of davis/brown/mendes and buy jenas then we have improved our squad and reduced wages overall. Although I do really like davis and mendes, jenas is simply younger and better.

But I do think that money is better spent elsewhere where the balance of the team isnt quite right. This is the left side of the team with ziegler, reid and edman. What ever way you look at there is only one left sided cover player. I think Ziegler will be/should be a left back so we need a quality left winger to challenge(replace) reid. Reid in my opinion has a quality left foot and some good vision, but he is not dynamic and scary enough …

His speed would be useful. How frustrating wa sit last season to see crosses whipped in by Davies, bypassing the two front men (usually cos Defoe was too small and Mido -then - too flabby) and noone at the back post to turn it in? Kuyt is very good in the Dutch league. We cannot say that he will be as prolific in the Premiership though.

One of his great attributes is that he is a great finisher and never stops running. He chases all the lost causes and scores around 10% of his goals by doing this.

Unless Jol is thinking of playing a 4-3-3 (Davids, Carrick, Jenas) then why buy him? We have more than enough quality back up in Mendes, Taino and Davis and must now surely get rid of Michael Brown. i don't see what the deal is with everyone wanting to sell davis. okay he was injured for the majority of last season but the get the guy fit and he'll be a hell of a player for us. he started the season well in santini's lacklustre side and provides bite in the tackle. a perfect replacement for davids should he pick up any knocks or the innevitable suspensions that he's likely to suffer from. give the boy a chance. while i like brownie he really is'nt quite good enough for our team now, which says a lot considering what an able regular he was for us last season. i think that it's brown and mendes who are gonna find themselves out in the cold, with tainio and davis as the replacements for carrick and davids. with huddlestone as further back up should we suffer any injuries.

It all seems quite simple to me. If Jenas is going to come, Davis and Brown will have to go. The logic of getting rid of Davis and Brown is sound in my view. Spurs are already overstaffed in central midfield. But is Jermaine Jenas the answer to our midfield problems ? I think not. The key weakness in our midfield is production of goals. This to my mind calls for a Tim Cahill type player. What would be smart business and would solve Spurs' goals production problem from midfield would be:

1. Sell Brown and Davis for £ 5m.

2. Do a straight player swap with Everton involving Freddie Kanoute and unsettled Tim Cahill - if Everton get difficult I think Kanoute + £ 2m for Tim Cahill would be plausible. A deal like this would suite both parties in my view. Everton would recieve a decent striker to partner Beattie, whilst Spurs would have a midfielder that can score goals.

3. With the net cash received from selling Brown and Davis, doing a swap with Everton involving Kanoute/Cahill (at least £…

Your 433 midfield of Jenas Carrick & Davids has no room for Routledge, one of the most exciting and invetive players in our squad?

And besides there is a limit to what can be done in the next few weeks. Think about the legal issues and complexities in multimillionpound deals! Then there all the logistical issues of moving these guys and their dependents, finding them a home, settling them in, etc. etc. We have only limited club resources for all of that and have already brought in a half-dozen new players this summer and must still be sorting them out!

Kuyt is not a good replacement for Kanoute. Better to stick with Kanoute and bring in one more player, pref a high quality left back.

Cahill scored a lot of goals in what was a "extraordinary" season for Everton.
It is my opinion though his great season was due partly to the astute management from Moyes. There are managers who just could bring that extra bit out of each player.Such as Brian Cough.We hardly heard anyone talk about Cahill when he was in Millwall.
His great season could be a passing thing under a style of play totally different from what Jol is employing now.

As jj is wanted by the likes of fergusen and wenger as well as jol i trust he must have great potential. He is by no way guarranteed to be a top player, he has a lot to improve on and he needs the right guidence(not souness). Buying jenas for more than six million pounds is taking a big risk. I think we have to take these risks otherwise we will loose out when the player blossoms and he goes to a bigger club. Someday if we continue to progress with some of those risks paying off we will be one of those bigger clubs again. Davis brown and mendes will probably be gone in the neer future so getting jenas now while we can makes sense imo.

Our problem at the moment is that we dont have the quality in the squad to compete with the so called big 3. Our first team yes maybe but our backups arn't exactly world class, Brown great heart but he's a robbie savage'esc player, Davis our new sick note, Mendes yes won CL but just dont feel his heart matches his ability. I believe we can go down one of two routes. Either stick with what we already have and sit on the cash till January, or go for broke and splash out now. If we spend now this would be my suggestion - Sell Kanoute to Everton for 6Mil. Use the 6Mil plus a makewight (Mendes if they are interested as the rumours suggest) for Kuyt, thats a deal worth approximately 9Mil. Loan Davis out till January (maybe back to fulham) to get some games under his belt, keep brown for now. My reasons for this are - Mendes won't be happy on the bench/in reserves, so let's move him on. Davis has more potential and fits the young brit profile the club are adopting, he just needs to get fit. Brown is more likely to accept bench/reserves - review the situation in January. We also need to strengthen the LB/LW situation. It is the only area where we don't appear to have 2 players for each position. I am so excited by all this - I can't remember a pre-season like it for ages. This talk of not needing a player who for a few years was tipped as 'Englands next greatest' shows how far we have come as a squad and as a football club. I love Spurs!

In terms of our squad, I think we need two possibly three players to help us push above the top 6 finish I think we are currently capable of. From what I have seen of Edman he is not a bad LB. Last year he won Sweden Player of the Yaer so can't be too bad! But I agree he could now do with cover/competition - what happened to the Wayne Bridge rumours? And apparently Stalteri can do the left. At centre back we are well covered - King and Dawson obvious first choice but Naybet great cover and Davenport will get better working with Big MJ instead of that moaner on the South Coast. we have the option on a 2yr extension on Keane's contract so he won't be leaving on a Bosman next year.

Its all very well just saying sell him and him and buy him and him, but remember these are real people not Championship manager. they have to settle in their surroundings and get used to area, club and colleagues.

The best teams are often themost settled. If you make wholesale changes you disrupt the squad and morale enormously.. better to make gradual changes.

Don't understand why some of you doesn't see Edman as top quality. He has not realised his full potential in Spurs yet but has been absolutely brilliant in the Swedish national team. If you compare him with Wayne Bridge for example I would take Edman any day of the week. With Staltieri as backup we have no need to strenghten this position by buying another LB.

Agree with most of you however that we need someone that can outpace defenders on LM, Reid is not a modern winger like Duff, Robben, Ronaldo, Ljungberg and even our own Routledge.

In my opinion it's only worthwile if we manage to let other players go, these would be Brown, Davis and at a push Mendes.

Edman's defending has been okay, but hardly brilliant. I do seem to remember a lot of crosses getting through and he's given away more than one penalty, though okay that may be just the position.

Going forward has been the problem. Good teams have attacking LB to overlap the LM (Cafuuu!) but he'll get a nosebleed that high up the pitch. Good strike v the Pool but even that was from nearer the halfway line than the box! :-D

Anyone who thinks JJ is the same type of player as Carrick obviously hasn't watched him play very much.. Last season he was in very poor form for Newcastle but then again he was in a very poor team and being played out of position. I personally feel he has the potential (only potential) at his age to be as good as viera. Similar build, good engine, can score when he gets in the box, good in the tackle. When JJ and Carrick played for England in the US they weren't in each others way, JJ was up and down and Carrick well like he does for Spurs struggles to get past the half way line. I think the reason we are interested in him is that we need a Young player to fill Davids boots when he leaves at the end of the season.. Mendes will go and so will Brown, which leave Davis as cover, and Huddleston as cover for Carrick.. He is available now and Jol and Levy can see his potential...BUT not for 15million, as no one will touch for that and Newcastle know that.

lets put the deal into context, if we sign JJ for 10m on a 5 year deal, in 5 years JJ will be 27 and if he has reached his potential then still worth between 7-10m if he has not we still would get 4-6m meaning we pay 4m for JJ's services for 5 years.

Thats how Levy's policy of buying young players is working as they are not clapped out heaps with no sell on value like poyet, ziege etc in the past. (exceptions being naybet and davids but they add to the teams ability [i.e already reached potential :D] over the length of their contract and were brought in on frees)

JJ is a quality midfielder, and I agree with other posts that if we are seriously aiming for the CL we need better players than Brown, Jackson, Bunji and also Davis.

It is quite amazing how far we have come though, this time last season I was hailing the signing of Davis, Mendez as they considerably strengthened our team, now they will struggle to get a place on the bench.

Don't think we need him this season, but I think we maybe trying to get him now while we have a chance before anyone else snaps him up. Definately a good player, but no better than what we have got at the moment. If we can get him for sensible money then go for it.

Walcott will not be coming as Redknapp will give him a fairly large role in the team this season.

FIFA do not allow these kind of transactions to take place. As far as we know, the transfer to the independant company is on hold until FIFA legislate the transfer.

It's not always about the money but we need to keep a clear head here! 9.5m is way too much for Jenas, we are not even going to discuss that 15m quoted by souness. Jenas for 5-6million is reasonable given that he has not done that much to warrant any higher. And certainly we need to sell players, no point paying so many midfiedlers to play reserve team football. Need to let go also of some of our defenders. I also would hate to see kanoute go as a make weight to newcastle.

I think we should buy JJ, then sell davis and Brown, and it seems like everyone forgets we have two tiers to our team. .There is todays team, with players strong enough to play in that, then there is the team of tomorrow with the best youth in the country, Once we have these two teams it is unlikely we will need to buy many big players for a number of years only the odd one to add quality where ever it becomes needed, or bring in further youth to keep us stocked with the best for the future. The youth players know they will only get a limited number of games a season for the first few years but then they will eventually move over and be the new fist teamers, thats why to everyone it seems we have a huge squad, we dont really have that big a squad we just have two tiers to it.

We haven't heard anything regarding Emmanuel Adebayor.

I believe that JJ would indeed be a good addition to the squad, especially if this means we will offload the likes of Brown, Davies, Mendes and Kanoute.
As it has previously been mentioned will the before noted names improve our likelihood of obtaining a champions league spot.
Dawson can definitely come in next to King.
Lets use the money to purchase a big strike partner for Defoe and JJ.

They maybe have in mind a possible midfield of:

Left: Davids
Centre (more attacking): Jenas
Centre (more defensive): Carrick
Right: Tainio

Not saying that would be the first choice, as Routledge and/or Reid could be introduced on one or both wings and then it is probably a case of losing one or both from Jenas and Davids. Tainio looks worthy of a place before either of those two at the moment (but injuries, form and the need for rests will play a part).

The debate on signing Jenas is an interesting one. It all centres around two words, STRENGTH and DEPTH.
Chelsea have strenght in depth, which means top quality players competing in every position. Spurs, by buying Jenas are trying to get this. They currently have strength, in the 1st two, maybee three players, and depth with loads of players competing for these places. So they have strength, and they have depth, but the two individually do not make strength in depth. So trying to buy Jenas is a good thing as it would give us strength in depth.

I understand people saying we need to strengthen the left defence and midfield, but quality does not become available that often, so when it pottentially does [ Jenas ] i am proud that we are going for it.

i normaly agree with alot of what thbn say but not on this subject. jj is not a holding player.he is a box to box. a player that can cover the hole pitch, up and down, up and down because of his great stamina. he is a real athlete with a good touch. you cannot not judge him from last season. he was out of position playing for a crap manager and over rated team. he is very much the box to box we need apart from davids who is temperary.

Yep bringing in JJ sounds great to me. We will have 4 great midfielders so we can play 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 if we need to. We should get rid of 2 out of davis, mendes and brown then replace them with one better younger player. if we get him there will be 4 top class central midfielders after the 2 places in the starting line up, same with up front. Other positions are pretty well covered, except LM, also we could do with replacing Garnder and Kanoute.
