Gardner Or Davenport?

It looks as though our towering defender Anthony Gardner is set to move to Charlton in a £1 million move. The reported fee can’t be correct can it? We signed Gardner from Port Vale (not Luton as previously stated) for £1 million 6 years ago. His transfer fee must have risen somewhat since then?

Although I doubt he would have ever got into the Spurs starting line-up unless something drastic happened to King, Dawson or Huddlestone, it’s my opinion that Davenport should have been the one moving.

The tall blonde defender we signed from Coventry was arrested last Monday night for his part in a punch up in a club in Bedford. What’s that all about? Pre-season was just around the corner when our player was drunk and decided he didn’t take lightly to insults and so took it upon himself to beat up two students.

These players are paid so much money every week. They are expected to be responsible, not just by the club, but also us, the fans. I am sure Martin Jol was furious. Not that Davenport got arrested, but that he was out at 3am in the first place.

Coventry fans have said that his attitude stinks. Southampton fans were fed up of his mediocre performances also.

So are we getting rid of the right player? Should Davenport be the one up for sale?

  1. get your facts right for a start he was signed from port vale. and i dont think it was 1million either.

    hes going to charlton for 1.6 million possibly rising to 3million.
  2. I think they can both go. As much as Gardener has been a good player for us we all know he has lapses of concentration and from what I saw of Davenport at Soton he did look poor (although how much of that is due to playing in a poor team needs to be seen....)

    Didn't we get Gardener from Port Vale?
  3. Mate, we can count ourselves lucky to get anything for him - if it rises to 2m its a bargain, he is one fo the worst defenders in the premiership and in my eyes will always be a Div 1 player. He gets outjumped by Phillips and Johnson the smallest strikers in Prem and is about 7ft tall

    id pay him to leave - he also has that Teres syndrome ( i think its spelt that way ) when he suddenly has a spasm and does something stupid with the ball.......

  6. Ginger Pele was from Luton ! Big Tone was from the Vale. I remember when we battered Torpedo London at WHL a few years ago to get through to the league cup final. Tony and Ledley were awesome that night. I really don't know whats happened to the big gangly defender. "I thought he'd be good, i was wrong, i was wrong"
  7. Davenport should be released immediately. Not one aspect of his behavior is redeemable.
    If Gardner wants to further his career he should move on. Although I for one will be sorry to see him go.
  8. He's got nice legs and a nice bum ! Both are fair players but Tonys better looking so I think we should keep him.

  11. 6'5" and never scored with his head. outjumped by a 5' 10" player for man. city's 4th goal 18 months ago. so skinny anyone can move him around in the area. in a word "useless".
    davenport was voted player of the season by conventry fans and that was the view of west ham fans while there. sending a young kid to a sinking disaster that was southampton was always risky on the confidence stakes. we dont know, and wont until mid-august, what he did or didnt do in the night club. if he was drunk at 3am and got involved in a fight then sell him to w.ham

From most of the reports I read towards the end of last season Davenport did not perform for Southamption. if he is the talent we have been led to beleive that he is, then he should have stood out as a leader of Southamptions defensive arrangements. He did figure in their attacking efforts when it came to head-the-ball stuff in opposition boxes.

    So, no change there. There is no place for another average defensive twat in THFC.

    Sad but necessary for Big Tony to go.

  15. Get rid of Gardner, everytime I see his name on the team sheet I worry for the team.
    As for Davenport give the bloke a chance and lets see if he can impress this season, after all he is an England U21 and one for the future???
  16. Gardner has failed to make a cd spot his own game in game out. I just don't see him doing it anymore as he has had plentyu of time to do it by now. About Davenport: I think it would be too soon to decide on him so give him another season. There is no point bringing in a player and sell him the next summer, so I think he deserves a fair crack at it. Same as Gardner did.

    gardner's had a lot of injury problems which would have affected his form and davenport's been loaned out twice and come on as sub once. how is he supposed to get used to the premiership like that? good grief. some spurs supporters are the biggest twats in the world. i'm fucking ashamed.
  18. I stand corrected. Davenport should be given a year in the Premiership. He does need to sort out his priorities though.
  19. i think that gardener should go as the fee could rise to 3 million and as for davenport he is going to be on the bench for most of next seaseon as we have king and dawson who are going to be great so slap his wrists and fine him but dont sell him he is going to be a good player !
  20. How do you know that the fee could rise to £3 million? Where did you get that?

    THBN sources are normally from our inside guys at the Lane, & they haven't told us that. Last we heard, the deal could rise to £1.6 only if Charlton get into Europe in his first season.
  21. Davenport needs to get into the real world - John Terry did exactly the same thing as him at his age and now look at him - with age comes maturity.....

    Gardner gives all he can on the pitch but the harsh reality of the fact is that is only what you would call a Palace or West Ham defender - not in my eyes a part of a young squad which could really go places in the years to come.

    That's why I wrote the post. I know he's no where near as good as King, Dawson or even Huddlestone, but as a squad player, coming in during lame ass league cup matches, he would be ok.
  23. Granted as a squad player he would be ok to come in if injury was the case behind Naybet, Dawson, King, Davenport and Huddlestone but realistically how many games would the guy get??

    Im sure he has aspirations of his own and as one other fan has stated, I too panic when I see his name on the team sheet of a premiership game....
  24. Get rid of both of them, neither of them even satisfy a decent Premiership squad player.

    Buy Upson and let King, Huddlestone, Dawson and Upson compete for the two central positions, that sounds like healthy competition to me!!
  25. Gardner is not good enough- it's as simple as that. He's had his chances and although he has improved and Jol it still isn't enough. Time to let him go Addicks if they want to cough up 2M on him. Jol wouldn't let him go if it didn't represent a) value for moneuy and b)they have another person lined up to take his place: Stalteri and Huddlestone.

    Give Davenport time before you judge him- he hasn't even played 5 games for Spurs yet! Perhaps he wont' make it but then again nothing ventured...

  27. Well then the option would be to sell Gardner to Charlton and watch them get relegated and send Davenport off on loan somewhere for the season and see how he does.... I dont care what anyone says, Davenport has got potential.
  28. Why is everyone raving about Huddlestone and Dawson? Dawson looked very good when he first broke into the team and I have high hopes for him but Alton Thelwell and Gary Doherty looked promising at first. Huddlestone hasn't yet kicked a ball in the Premiership. Why are we all so sure he won't turn out like Gardner or Davenport (who some have already written off)? King and Naybet are the only proven defenders in the squad. We have enough back up to sell Gardner - good luck to him but we can use the money where we are thinner. Dawson, Huddlestone and even Davenport I have high hopes for and then there's Defendi as well. Let's get Bunje off the wage bill if we are looking to thinm the squad out.
  29. Fair point that Huddlestone hasnt taken the step up yet, but from what I have seen of him for Derby and the U21's, he looks the nuts - Dawson also has huge potential. Davenport needs to buck his ideas up and then we might see the best of him - Gardner can go, we should wish him luck but we wont miss him.

    Jol will start with King and Naybet at the back with Dawson on the bench.
  30. Can someone please tell me why there are all these stories linking us with big name strikers when we clearly have 4 top class, and proven strikers already?? It is the defense and midfield where baldy needs to invest. There is no doubting we have an abundance of potential at the back, but that is all it is at the moment, potential. We have a class act in King, who is only going to get better, but after him, the only real experienced boy is naybet, and his engine surely wont last a full premiership season.

    In my humble opinion, we need to buy a big name defender, like Upson as someone suggested and then let them all fight it out for the right to put on the lilly white shirt.

Week in Week out I hear the same old shite - Spurs being connected with just about everyone under the sun - all it is doing gentlemen is aiding rival fans with more ammunition to take the piss out of us with - Martin Jol needs to stop fucking about with players who he can see he wont get and build around players that want to wear the shirt. We need an attacking midfielder, some one who can link up Carricks work infront of the defence and pass it through to Defoe and Whoever who are making the space up front.
  32. ithink it was the wrong decision to send davenport to southampton as he obviously was good for coventry for years and then impressed when he was at west ham. we only recalled him early as we had no defensive backup at christmas.get rid of gardner to clumsy with ball at his feet and looks like a freak actually look at callum
  33. Why do so many Spurs fans slag our own players off, calling Gardner a Wanker.... Their is no need for that abuse.
    O.K. Gardner in my opinion is not Prem standard, the Jury is still out on Davenport. King is a certainty to start I think Jol will play Naybet for a good percentage of games. Defendi, Huddlestone and (in my opinion a future great at WHL) Dawson will all gain experience in league cup and games against lesser class teams or if we need more pace. I would play Dawson with King he looks so calm on the ball and was my man of the match at Anfield.
    Sell Gardner for ours and his own good, let Davenport go on loan and see how he goes on.
    As for the CHUMP from Bedford who said it's hard to avoid a punchup in Oxygen Nightclub, well the answer is.... Don't F'in go there!!! He is a Prem player, in a position we would love the opportunity to be in. He is paid enough money to go to more upmarket clubs and shouldn't be out at 2:30-3:00 in the morning.

  35. gardner is tosh, he looked a very good potential player a couple of years ago but hasn't progressed, so the decision to sell him is the correct one and as for davenport, i agree with an earlier post that if he was up to premiership class he would have shone at southampton but in the end he was barely making the bench!! no if a offer came in he is anougher player who should go, we have plenty of cover there at cb, king, dawson(who has started well), naybet,huddlestone (who peter taylor ses hes going to be a cracking player,and who we to argue with him with whats he done at u21s)paramot(who has played there) defendi so there is abundance of cover, money will be useful for a good link up man from midfield to forwards, but the way jolly seems to be looking at is, having two genuine old fashioned wingers supplying the crosses and a solid centre midfield and if that the case i for one would love that, come on you SPURS hrrbrr6
  36. Davenport is poor and needs to leave!
    Gardener is clearly not first choice but he provides cover for king and dawson should they get injured. I thinkhe should stay as squad depth is important!

  41. I think Dawson is already ahead of Naybet, partly on his ability, and partly because it now takes naybet even longer than a week to recover from a game.

    To answer your question Anthony all the way, cause the moment Callum'bolde bombshell' joined forces with Harry at st mary's that was the moment he lost any chance of becoming something @WHL, first team opps whatever, harry is career wrecker!!!

  43. Gardener is not good enough to be part of a team with ambitions to win the Premiership. Imagine him in the Champions League, I can't!.
    I do think he is better than he has shown us, over the past season, and would find his level at Charlton.
  44. Get rid of King?? Go back to watching rugby mate, you obviously know f**k all about football. King against France, (and every team in the prem) was amazing.... It's hard for someone of his standard to keep carrying a defence on his own, it's hard to cover the cantre back position, when you have Naybet (who played well MOST of the time) getting roasted by Huckerby, and Atouba getting roasted by..... errr..... everyone!! He can't be everywhere. If Edman stays at left back, and Dawson plays most of the games next year (especially against teams like arsenal with faster strikers) King will be able to go back to concentrating on improving his own game. He has been carrying our defence since Campbell left, he never had time to progress into a solid defence. Sell Gardner and Davenport, both good players, not sure Gardner will ever reach his potential, and I think Davenport will always be in that crappy place, which is too good for the championship/not good enough for the premiersh…

    Neither Gardner Or Davenport are worth a shirt - stick with Dawson & King. Big things from those boys for the forseeable future.
