Time for Spurs to be ruthless with the squad

Shaun Murphy on making his third world snooker final explained that from nearly quitting he and his team decided he had to change 2 things on the table and 57 off the table, things like what was between his ears and his self belief.
Sir Alex Ferguson was interviewed around the snooker table and again his thoughts if you applied them to Spurs players are both interesting and revealing.
Money doesn't matter to the winners, for the best players it's all about winning, below them then yes they are playing for money to earn a living. Now obviously he is not saying that is the case with every player but it's an element that separates the two.
Sir Alex felt that Novak Djokovic is a winner, if he is losing he has an injury and calls the trainer, he stops the flow of the game, he's like Mourinho in that.
You look at that attitude, that winning mentality and ask yourself how many Spurs players have it. If you look at someone like Erik Lamela or Emmanuel Adebayor, can you honestly say they have that killer instinct? Mentally they just don't have it, thy are winners when it is easy for them to be winners but when it's tough to be a winner they are lacking, skilled yes but mentality is everything in sport, skill is not enough.
Three sports, all require skill but all need the mentality side to be winners. A player who will give you something every now and then simply isn't good enough, he may have enough skill but without the mental side, you are often carrying him. When it comes to assessing a player, if you have to hope to much for a top performance then there are not mentally good enough and at those times you have to be harsh and dispense with their services.
Tim Sherwood informed Daniel Levy which players were playing for themselves, for money and which were playing for the club, had the right winning mentality. He pointed out Harry Kane was one of the best trainers and out trained Roberto Soldado every week. Mauricio Pochettino has seen the same thing and fair play to Daniel Levy and the club, they have taken a stance and done something about it. They have been forcing certain players out the club to improve the club in the long run.
Supporters can learn a lot from other sports, football is not unique in not needing mentality, it's the same as every other sport. Young and hungry is our path now and you have to say the youngsters in the side look as though they want to improve. For Kane, Dier, Mason and Bentaleb it's been a first full season of football in the top flight with players like Fazio having played in other top leagues. I think some fans forget that, they call for giving youngsters a chance and then moan if the club isn't obtaining Champions League football when they do so.
The side is being built for seasons to come, those four plus the improvement in Danny Rose auger well for the future. Buying the right players with the right attitude now is all important, we can't afford to sign more players more interested in their own pay packet or lacking the mental side of the game.
It's a big big summer coming up.
