Babel or Downing?

Rumours are that Liverpool's left-winger, Ryan Babel has been told that he can leave the club after not being guaranteed a place in Benitez's side.

Babel asked Benitez for a loan move in December 2008, but Benitez dismissed any transfer talk relating to Babel, instead, asking his young Dutch winger to work harder in training and regain his place in the team.

That all changed this week when Benitez was told that he would have to sell before he could buy. Reports surrounding Liverpool's financial status alerted Babel, who came knocking on the managers door after being warned by Dutch coach, Bert van Marwijk, that "only footballers playing regular football would be counted within any squads announced".

Harry Redknapp is a known admirer of Babel's skills and was linked with a loan move for the Dutch ace in the last January transfer window.

If Middlesbrough stick to their guns and decline any additional overtures from Spurs, Redknapp could look towards Babel, who cost Liverpool £11.5 million when he signed from Ajax in July 2007.

Spurs Chairman, Daniel Levy, would not feel comfortable in paying anywhere near that for the Dutchman, but his hand could be forced if no alternative is found.

I personally rate Babel well above Downing as he has flair and an abundance of pace. I do feel that his best position is up front though. If we were to sign him, it would be a real coup for the club as I feel Harry could get the kid motivated and playing.

What do you think? If you had a choice over Ryan Babel or Stewart Downing, who would you prefer?
