Vassel Linked, But Do We Need Him?

Martin Jol is apparently interested in signing Aston Villa striker Darius Vassel.

Where on earth do they get these stories from? In my opinion, Vassel is not better than our current crop of strikers. He scores more goals for England than he does at club level also.

If we are going to be constantly linked with strikers or any players, at least let them be better than our current players. We are a club moving forwards, not backwards.

Linking us with players like Figo and Vieri is showing that we are ambitious. But when we are linked to players like Lua-Lua and Vassel, you begin to wonder.

I feel that the player most needed at Spurs is a flair/creative midfielder that can link play up to the strikers. Our scoring from midfield last season was dismal. If we are to qualify for the UEFA Cup or Champions League, we need to have a goal scoring midfielder.

Rosicky comes to mind. Although the club will need to fork out at least £7-8 million for the Czech Republic star.

Any thoughts on who would be your ideal attacking midfielder at the club?

PS. Tainio can’t play in that position. He’s more of a battler than a flair player. Good signing though.

  1. The flair player we need is Yossi Benayoun - he is a skilful player who scored goals last year for a struggling side in Spain (Racing Santander).

    He was yesterday bought out of his contract by Pini Zahavi suggesting he is on his way to England.

  2. David Beckham is a London boy, but would he play for Tottenham? Yes we have a young team but it is important to have an experienced player in the Middle of the park to control the play & lead the younger players, even though he did not do as well as we would have liked, Jamie Redknapp was that player who was a type of role model for the youth. If you ask me JJ is the man or Becks, but realistically Spurs always talk about the BIG signings & that is exactly what it is, TALK! We can never deliver the goods. Martin look out for Harry Kewell he may be what we are looking for a ball player who will create opportunities

    Sites like this. Replicating stories from the like of classy publications such as the Mirror, Sun, Star and Beano. As if we need another midget?

    Who actually knows if we were in for Vieri, Figo, Rosicky, Ronaldo. Morientes, MVB or any of the other 'Big Names' that we are inevitably linked with every transfer windwow.

    The players (or players agents) may well claim we are to bolster their ego and transfer price. The classy publications may claim we are to bolster thier empty sports pages.

  5. If you believed all the stories in the papers we would have the best team in the world - the amount of world class players we have supposedly been buying over the last few years.... But i agree i dont think vassell is good enough.

    On a lighter note i hope Chelsea do get Gerrard as i have never rated him.

    Why the he** would we want these players?
    Beckham, a big-earner who wouldn`t do us any good, besides why concentrate on a player who would have had us appr. 26th in the pecking order of interested clubs??
    Kewell, a major fu**-up who hasn`t done a decent thing since he played for Leeds.
    AJ, who scored over half of CP goals at penalty, and wouldn`t match Defoe at all, both being small strikers.
    Robert Pires, what a piece of sh**. And we wouldn`t want to have sh** playing for us, would we?
  11. I cannot believe the number of players we are linked with. It amounts to virtually every player that becomes available. I would like to see one name added, and Beckham would be my choice, although I would also be happy to see Jenas or Downing at the Lane. One player who I have a sneaking liking for though is Lua Lua. He was terrific at the end of last season in an awful team. If Fredi was going, then I wouldn't mind seeing him here.
  12. Gerrard is an amazing player. He has the ability to lift a team. Look at what he did last season for Liverpool. He practically took them through the season.

    Brown is a brilliant Spurs squad player. He will be even better come 05/06 season. He just needs to learn to shoot more often and on target.

    Leave Browny out of your list. In fact, leave him there, no one cares!

    Whoever put down the name Pires needs to be shot - for abvious reasons plus he is over the hill now.

    The only player that I have seen mentioned that we need to concentrate on is Downing - the rest can go forth and reproduce.

    Another thing to consider - If Gerrard does go to Chelsea - where does that leave Cole??? Duff on the left, Lampard and Gerrard in the centre, Robben behind the front man then on the right they have Tiago???

  15. Last summer's transfer activity was accompanied by a complete lack of awareness on the part of the papers as to who was coming until they'd arrived.

    I have a funny feeling we won't know who the "big signings" are likely to be until they are trotted out at the press conference.

  18. Whoever said Nicky Butt needs there head lookin at. We've already got Carrick, Brown and Tainio who can tackle so why sign a hasbeen. He only looked half decent because he played at Man U. As for AJ, Lua Lua and Vassell. Do we really need third rate strikers when we've got a crop of 1st class ones? Vassell can't cut it and AJ is just another Kevin Phillips. One good season and that's your lot. Only Mids I'd have would be Banayoun or Cole. Forget the French T***ER Pires.
  19. The one thing I will say is that we seem to be missing some sort of direction in the transfer market. Jol, for all his great trainer skills, is not talent spotter as we saw in Holland. Levy, I'm afraid is a businessman. I honestly think we need some sort of "advisor" at this stage. I dont expect any new players before the new season as I sense it will be panic buying.

    But I agree we need an attacking midfielder who can score 5-10 goals a season - with that and the current squad and Jol we could do well.

    Hows this for an idea: appoint Graeme Souness as technical director/head scout - this guy cant coach to save his life but he can attract and convince players to come to a club - remember Stewart, Ruddock, Clough, Ferguson and now Parker and Emre - all sought after at the time. I expect he will be sacked by the end of the season
  20. Stop believing everything you read in the papers and think.....

    We are on the right track with what has happened at the club for the last year.

    MJ has told us where he is heading with what he has already done...it looks like we are going to be playing with two wide boys who can actually provide some service from out wide and DEEP....Routledge and Reid, these boys will actually get behind the defence and whip some crosses in.....Defoe will have a ball next year with some actual service being provided! Something we didn't get from dear old Simon, ( God don't you just love it that we screwed Everton out that much money for that piece of crap!)

    Our main worry is that we do not have a midfielder that gets anywhere near double figures in the goal department. Christ we have trouble getting someone near 5!

    No top three team will get to the top three WITHOUT the midfield contributing goals. We have great midfielders that do the jobs that they are good at but no goal scorers.........sit …

    D'Allesandro or
    Joe Cole

    Previous writers remarks about a goalscoring midfielder are spot on the argentine lad is supposed to be sheer class....

    MJ should also consider Van Der Vaat.

    To the person who said bring in Souness - what are you on??? the boy cant coach - clearly has a problem with his own players - this is clearly reflected in the press and the comments Robert recently made - and you want him to be our new Arnesen of trying to attract players??? behave mate!!!
  22. Great to see the Spurs faithful stating we should buy ransom foreigners who are probably good on championship manager that haven't been seen in real life.

    Keanes contract is coming to an end and if we don't sell he will leave so Vassell would be a very welcome signing if we get him for the right price. That still leaves us with 2 big men and 2 small men.

    As for a creative midfielder i'll go with someone we have actually seen play week in, week out and the best option we have is Steed Malbranque.

    Joe Cole will be available even if Chelski dont get Gerrard, they still SWP on his way.

    Rosicky, D'allesandro and Benayoun could all be possible targets. Lets just hope our scouts are really busy searching other countried for young talent.

    Joe Cole's the only young, proven EPL attacking (and scoring) midfielder, who could be available if Gerrard goes to chelski.

    He needs to play regularly to improve his England chance in the world cup.

    He's now with us. His name is Mick Brown.
  28. Good shout for Malbranque, a (rare) realistic transfer target who can link midfield to attack and score more goals than Ledley in a season

    maybe we could do what Milan and other clubs have done with out of favour Chelsea players and loan J.Cole for a season, as he'll just be warming the bench behind SWP, Robben and Duff

    as for that s**te Pires, he only scores tap-ins after the rest of his team do all the hard work, just the kind of cr*p spurs dont need

  31. I'm glad a couple of people mentioned the need for a goalscoring midfielder - Jermaine Defoe was in the top 5 premiership goalscorers last season but still actually scored less prem' goals than Robert Pires !!

    Keane & Defoe both scored 20+ goals in all competitions & invariably if one started the other one didn't. Yet our midfield couldn't manage half a dozen goals between them.

    Unfortunately players like Downing & Jenas aren't realistic targets for this season - if they were available bigger clubs would sign them. The reality is these players are going to want european football.

    Most of the newspaper speculation revolves around big names on big contracts who are either past it(anyone watch vieri in euro 2004 ???)or wouldn't be value for money, & players who aren't an improvement on what we have (Johnson, Vassell, Lua Lua, Carlton Cole etc...).

    I'll be very surprised if we sign anyone else of note before January, but i don't think fans …

    1.Mido(Magician)
    2.Reto (consisitant, new word for us spurs fans)
    3.HUddlestone'The new rosicky'(someone who can actually run the game unlike Michael Carr-sick)
    4Gardner(A victim cause he can actually control that dang ball)

  90. Obviously, as a Spurs fan we all have different views. For starters, David Beckham will never come to Spurs, Harry Kewell, if he has any sense will stay at Liverpool and Okocha is too old. If Martin Jol has any sense he should sign Lua Lua or Darius Vassel. They both young and very pacey. But if I had to chose between the two, I will chose Lua Lua. What a fantastic talent. Did you see the boy against Southampton. He literally destroyed them himself in 20 mins. We need a player like this at Spurs. Especially when we struggle against teams like Palace. Also I can imagine an attacking force with Lua and Defoe. It is all over. They will rip teams apart. But lets not get too excited becuase if Portsmouth wish to stay in the Premiership, they will not let Lua Lua go. Plus we cant afford him.Oh well!
