Stewart Downing has issued a 'come and get me plea' to Tottenham Hotspur.

The player and his advisor Ian Elliott walked out of the Riverside boardroom as talks on his new contract broke down yet again.

''We have held talks but now we are at an impasse. Stewart is relaxed about the whole situation and the Tottenham bid just shows how highly regarded he is and he is pleased to be linked with such a high profile club. However, both he and myself are very disappointed with the contract that has been offered to him," Elliott said.

Spurs bid a reported £4 million plus Calum Davenport on Monday, only for Middlesbrough to turn the offer down flat.

Sources close to the Spurs hierarchy have said that Levy will offer £6.3 million on Monday morning.

Martin Jol has reiterated in the past that he would like two out-and-out wingers. With Andy Reid always dropping deep and infield, that leaves Reto Ziegler and Atouba as the only recognised left sided midfielders.

Downing would fit into the category of winger Jol craves and would also add to the transfer policy of buying young gifted British players.

If Middlesbrough cannot tie Downing to a new contract, they will have to consider Tottenham's new offer.
