Spurs may swap Mendes for McCarthy

Tottenham hope to sign Benni McCarthy as part of a swap deal that would take Pedro Mendes back to FC Porto.

Martin Jol knows the South African striker well from his time at Ajax and wants to add extra firepower to his squad, especially as Robbie Keane is likely to leave White Hart Lane.

Jol met McCarthy's agent, Rob Moore, last month and the 27-year-old would welcome a move to the Premiership.

Jol's good working relationship with the Portuguese club's new manager, fellow Dutchman Co Adriaanse, will strengthen his cause, but Spurs face competition from Newcastle and Bolton.

McCarthy would welcome a move to Spurs though as it has been his dream to live in London.

If the move does go ahead, many Spurs fans will be unhappy that Mendes has left the club. He has a cult following at the club and scored the goal that never was at Old Trafford against Manchester United.
