Newcastle United chairman Freddie Shepherd has spoken about Tottenham's reported bid for 22-year old Jermaine Jenas.

Shepherd said: "We're not in the business of selling our best players and JJ (Jermaine Jenas)definitely falls into that category."

"Graeme Souness made him captain when Alan Shearer was injured last season and I would imagine he's a leading candidate to take the armband on a permanent basis once Alan retires. That's how highly he's rated here.

"There's been no contact at all from Spurs but even if there was, they would be wasting their time."

This may be a ploy in getting a larger transfer fee for the former Nottingham Forest player. Newcastle signed Jenas for £5 million and the midfielder also broke into the England squad.

With Newcastle already forking out £6.5 million and a reported further £7 million on Inter;s Turkish midfielder Emre, Jenas may be surplus to requirements.

Souness also dropped Jenas towards the end of last season, which could imply that the talented midfield general's days are numbered at the club.

It is strange though, that Tottenham, who have the most central midfielders in the league, are after another central midfielder. If Jenas does sign, the door will open up for Brown to move to Birmingham, and Sean Davis's future will be in doubt also.
