Spurs Transfer News: January rumblings

The January transfer window is fast approaching and Tottenham Hotspur find themselves navigating a mix of injury crises, squad depth concerns and opportunities to strengthen key positions.

Here’s the latest roundup on Spurs' transfer prospects and rumours.

Ilya Zabarnyi (Bournemouth)

Spurs are reportedly keeping tabs on Bournemouth’s star defender, Ilya Zabarnyi.

The 22-year-old Ukrainian has impressed with his defensive prowess, speed and ball progression, making him a vital cog in Bournemouth’s lineup.

Zabarnyi, who has a contract with Bournemouth until 2029, has started all 12 league games this season and was named the club's Supporters' Player of the Season in 2023/24.

His transfer value, estimated between €37.4M and €62.3M, reflects his rising profile.

However, a January move looks unlikely given his importance to Bournemouth and the challenges of mid-season business.

Ashley Phillips Recall

Tottenham are considering recalling 19-year-old defender Ashley Phillips from his loan spell at Stoke City.

With injuries to Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies all out for up to 3 months leaving Ange Postecoglou short on defensive options, Phillips could provide a cost-effective solution.

Phillips has featured prominently for Stoke, making 13 appearances and scoring once in the League Cup.

While recalling him could address immediate needs, it might disrupt his development, given the consistent minutes he’s enjoying at Stoke.

Postecoglou has stated previously that he doesn't want to sign someone to block the path of Ashley Phillips so he could seek a short-term loan deal until the end of the season to allow Phillips to remain on loan.

Jonathan David (Lille)

Spurs are reportedly advancing their pursuit of Lille striker Jonathan David.

The 24-year-old Canadian has been in prolific form this season, netting 17 goals and providing three assists in 23 appearances.

Tottenham are said to be working on a pre-contract agreement for a free transfer in the summer of 2025, potentially offering a significant financial package.

With Barcelona cooling their interest, Spurs could have a clear path to secure David, who has long been on their radar. A double swoop for David and his Lille teammate Angel Gomes is also being discussed.

Angel Gomes (Lille)

Another Lille star linked with Spurs is Angel Gomes, a versatile midfielder capable of playing as a 6, 8, or 10.

Gomes, who has provided 10 assists this season and made his senior England debut, is reportedly in advanced talks with Spurs over a pre-contract agreement.

While doubts remain about how Gomes fits into Ange Postecoglou’s system, his ability to adapt and his potential availability on a free transfer make him an intriguing prospect.

Spurs face competition from other Premier League clubs, but Gomes' move could bolster Tottenham's midfield depth.

Omar Alderete (Getafe)

Paraguayan center-back Omar Alderete has emerged as a potential £10m target for Spurs.

Known for his physicality and defensive awareness, Alderete could offer temporary cover for Tottenham’s injury-hit backline.

However, concerns about his lack of pace and history as a journeyman raise questions about his suitability for Postecoglou’s high-intensity system.

At 27, Alderete has shown consistency for Getafe this season, but whether he aligns with Spurs’ long-term plans remains uncertain.

Teo Hernández (AC Milan)

AC Milan’s 27-year-old left-back, Teo Hernández, has been linked with Spurs as a potential option to strengthen the left side of the defence.

Hernández, valued at around €50m, brings leadership, versatility and a wealth of experience.

However, doubts about his fit in Postecoglou’s tactical setup and competition from clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid make this deal challenging.

Djed Spence

Djed Spence’s future at Spurs is uncertain, with rumours of a return to Nottingham Forest gathering steam.

Despite his promise, Spence has struggled for game time, even amid Spurs' injury woes.

A move back to Forest, where he was a key figure during their promotion campaign, could rejuvenate his career.

He had mentality problems, made an effort, but not getting immediate results from that may have returned to the wrong mentality.

The Bigger Picture

Spurs enter the January window with pressing questions: Should they prioritize long-term squad building or focus on immediate fixes for injuries?

Postecoglou has already stated any January signings must fit for the medium-term or the long-term, he isn't interested in permanent short-term signings.

That does mean that loan moves for 6 months are a possibility, depending upon availability.

The club’s defensive struggles and potential moves for Zabarnyi, Alderete, or Phillips highlight the balancing act required in a notoriously tricky window.

With key areas like central midfield, left-back, and even the goalkeeper position potentially needing reinforcements, fans will hope for smart, impactful decisions that address short-term needs.

However, it is not likely that the head coach and board will compromise the club’s long-term vision.
