The 8 elements Postecoglou didn't mention

Clive from THBN welcomes you again and today we'll look at the Ange Postecogloy press conference ahead of tonight's game Spurs vs Manchester City.

In his pre-game talk with assembled journalists he answered the usual inane question, will you change tactics and more park the bus but we'll take a look at a far more interesting exert.

Postecoglou during his press conference (embargoed section) said:

"There's always some consistent things that I see. You look at all the successful teams, there are certain characteristics within that, aside from quality, aside from anything else, those teams have and they seem simple from the outside.

"But once you're in, [they're] sometimes the most difficult things to achieve. To understand how important that a team-first ethos is, how important it is that you get people with different personalities, different characters, all to believe in one thing.

"You know, how you change an environment, how do you change behaviour? And these are irrespective of the quality, but all across all sports, all champion teams have these things.

"So that's what you're trying to instill, but like I said, it's not always easy and they're always different how you get to that endpoint. So, this is different from what I had to do at Celtic or Yahama or in Australia, but the principles of it are the same."

Some of these key characteristics and principles that Postecoglou is referring to, but doesn't mention, which are common among successful teams include:

  1. Team-First Ethos: Emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the team over individual achievements.

If a player is coming to you for the money, is that the right motivation to achieve a team-first ethos?

  2. Belief in a Common Goal: Getting individuals with diverse personalities and characters to believe in and work towards a shared objective.

Utterly essential, if someone has not 100% bought into what you are doing, replace them or they'll drag everyone and the teams' performance down. Last season to this season proves that, a gulf in performance.

  3. Adaptability: Acknowledging that the methods to achieve success may vary, and being flexible in adapting to different environments and challenges.

At Tottenham, the players have had to adapt to a new coach, a new character leading them, new training methods, a new playing system, a new mentality of play, adjust to a team-ethos approach, new challenges brought about by suspensions and injuries.

Like any Top 4 club Spurs face a myriad of challenges, for some players cultural change, for others learning to deal with setbacks.

A holistic approach has to be taken so there are a lot of off-field elements that various members of staff have to perform to get the optimum out of a player, on a consistent basis.

  4. Environmental Influence: Recognizing the impact of the training and working environment on individual and team performance.

State-of-the-art facilities can contribute to players' physical and mental well-being. Would you rather work in plush offices or a run down office starting to fall to pieces?

Mentally it puts you in a different place. It's no different for a professional footballer.

Creating a positive and motivating atmosphere within the training ground is key. This involves fostering a culture of camaraderie and a shared commitment to the team's goals. A positive environment can have a direct impact on morale and team cohesion.

Why oh why then do some of our fans try to undermine that while claiming to support the club?

  5. Behavioural Change: Understanding the significance of changing behaviours within the team to foster a winning culture.

Leadership development, team cohesion, work ethic, adaptability and resilience, accountability, positive communication, sportsmanship, adoption of a winning mindset, continuous improvement.

All are elements in shaping the attitudes, actions and values of the players, which contributes to the success of a team.

  6. Consistency: Identifying consistent elements or characteristics that successful teams possess, aside from just the quality of players.

Establishing a consistent and identifiable playing style is crucial to achiev consistency, so why do journalists continually ask if Postecoglou will change his style for a particular game?

Answer, they are professional journalists, not coaches, not football experts, not experts in the art of success, they don't know what it takes.

Consistency is the foundation of success. This is true off the field too with consistency of business strategy that aligns with the long-term vision of the club.

It should permeate the entire club, not just the players.

  7. Leadership: Implicitly referring to the role of leadership in shaping the team culture and achieving success.

A manager who fosters a positive and winning culture sets the tone for the entire squad. You can see this in Postecoglou and the result is everyone climbing onboard following the Pied Piper.

A leader has to have a long-term vision, both Daniel Levy and Ange Postecoglou have that. In one it's appreciated, in the other it's not.

  8. Champion Mindset: Cultivating a mindset that goes beyond the surface simplicity and understands the deeper, sometimes more challenging aspects of team success.

First, there should be ambitious long-term goals, resilience as setbacks are part of a journey, continuous improvement like that shown by Harry Kane or Heung-min Son, mental toughness to perform under pressure, a team-first mentality, attention to detail, adaptability to different situations, having a learning mindset, being united and holding a legacy vision.

That is brushing the surface but I'll leave you to think how they apply today and which ones you can see in the manager and his players.
Right, we'll sign off for today.
