The xG Premier League Table

Welcome to Edition 2 of Table Toppers News, yes let the positive fun continue, banish the doom and gloom merchants forever, they'll help you win nothing and complain when they achieve it!

New Technical Director

Johan Lange (43) has been announced as the new Tottenham Hotspur Technical Director. The Dane starts his role on 1st November.

He is currently with Aston Villa where he is Global Director of Football and International Academies.

He joined Aston Villa from FC Copenhagen on July 2020 and was responsible for signing Ollie Watkins, Matty Cash and Emiliano Buendia (Argentinian), three players who have been instrumental in the progress of the Midlands club this season.

Some are speculating that Fabio Paratici leaves but he will remain as a consultant, which given his transfer record is good news.

It was Paratici who convinced Rodrigo Bentancur to join Tottenham instead of Aston Villa, who had also agreed a fee with Juventus for him.

Lange will have responsibility for recruitment, analytics and talent identification across Spurs' senior and academy teams.

Scott Munn has responsibility for all football departments, the academy and women's teams.

It's the boring international break so we have to hunt around for things to talk about don't we so as we are Table Toppers let's look at the xG table and see where we are.

For those of you living in a cave xG is the metric to evaluate what is expected of a team or player based on their stats.

We'll have a look at the English Premier League (EPL) Table after 8 games going into this 2-week EPL break.

The table below reflects the figures for expected goals (xG), expected goals against (xGA), expected points (xPTS), and the "+/- xPTS" tally against expectation.

The +/- column shows how each club is performing against their actual tally. A minus number is performing better, a + tally means they are performing worse than expected.

Quite a huge difference between the expected and the actual and given xG is believed to be the best available statistic for evaluation, you can either praise the mindset and resilience of our players for finding a way to get the job done or say luck is with Spurs at the moment.

This league table shows the teams performing above expectations. London clubs feature prominently.

The question to ask of those down the bottom of this table is do they have a goalscorer?

The table opens up many a road for discussion as to why. Leave your thoughts in the comments section.
