Victor Nelsson Scouting Report

Morning Spurs fans. Tottenham have been linked with many centre-backs as the club looks to rebuild its confidence-sapped defensive line. Once again I'll look at the central defenders and tackle another scouting report, this time on a player Spurs have put in a bed for, Victor Nelsson.

These related articles will open in a new window if you have missed them. The first articlee discusses midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, the second centre-back Roger Ibañez and the third covers goalkeeping target David Raya, the fourth another centre-back target Edmond Tapsoba, the fifth Guglielmo Vicario, the sixth Kyogo Furuhashi..

Tottenham have made inquiries for right-footed Galatasaray centre-back Victor Nelsson and spoken to his representatives to see if he would have interest in a move to North London.

The Turkish giants want €22m (£18.8m), the Danish internationals (10 caps) release clause is 25m (£21.36m) and Spurs have offered 19m (£15.24m) plus bonuses.

This certainly fits in with Postecoglou's history of finding undervalued players, something he has been brought into Tottenham by Daniel Levy to do, although Spurs have been following him for some while.

Galatasaray president Erden Timur has made a trip to London to hold transfer talks with Spurs after accepting that Nelsson wants to leave.

Victor Nelsson Scouting Report

Player Profile

Name: Victor Nelsson
Born; September 14, 1998
Nationality: Danish
Position: Centre-back
Current Club: Galatasaray

Nelsson has made a name for himself with his strong defensive abilities and impressive ball-playing skills. Liverpool scouted him in October.

Physical Attributes

Nelsson possesses good physical attributes that complement his defensive abilities. Standing at around 6 feet 2 inches (188 cm) tall, he has a strong and athletic build. His height allows him to win aerial duels effectively, while his athleticism enables him to cover ground quickly and make important recovery runs.

Defensive Abilities

Nelsson is a disciplined and intelligent defender who excels in reading the game. He has a strong positional sense and is adept at organizing the defensive line. His anticipation skills allow him to intercept passes and make crucial tackles.

Nelsson is composed under pressure and remains calm in one-on-one situations. He displays good recovery speed and often makes timely interventions to nullify opposition attacks.

Ball Skills and Distribution

One of Nelsson's standout attributes is his ball-playing ability. He is comfortable in possession and has excellent ball control. Nelsson is capable of carrying the ball forward from the defensive line, initiating attacking moves, and driving into midfield to create space.

His passing range is impressive, as he can deliver accurate long balls to switch play or initiate counter-attacks. He is also comfortable playing short, crisp passes to maintain possession and build from the back.

Tackling and Duels

Nelsson is a strong tackler and has excellent timing when going for challenges. He possesses good strength, allowing him to hold off opponents and win physical battles. His ability to anticipate opponents' movements enables him to make crucial interceptions and dispossess opponents cleanly.

Nelsson is also confident in aerial duels, thanks to his height and timing. He is dominant in the air, both defensively and during set-pieces, often winning headers and clearing the ball effectively.

Overall, Victor Nelsson is an impressive central defender with a well-rounded skill set. His strong defensive abilities, combined with his ball-playing skills and distribution, make him a valuable asset for any team. With his youth and potential, Nelsson has the potential to develop into a top-quality defender and make a significant impact at the highest level of the game.

Does Victor Nelsson fit the skill set required?

Based on the skill set requirements I think defenders need to successfully play in Ange Postecoglou's potential system at Spurs, I feel Victor Nelsson possesses several qualities that would make him a potential fit:

  1. Adaptability to Different Formations: Nelsson has demonstrated his ability to adapt to different defensive formations throughout his career. He has experience playing as a center-back in both back four and back three systems, which aligns with Postecoglou's preference for versatile defenders.

  2. Positional Awareness and Central Coverage: Good positional awareness is crucial for defenders in Postecoglou's system. They need to understand their positioning in relation to their teammates and be able to cover central areas effectively. Nelsson has shown an understanding of defensive positioning and the ability to read the game, which are valuable attributes in this regard.

  3. Ability to Force Play Wide: Defenders in Postecoglou's system should be capable of forcing play wide, limiting the opposition's central attacking options. Nelsson has displayed the ability to close down space and direct play towards wider areas, either through pressing or intelligent positioning.

  4. Communication and Coordination: Communication and coordination among defenders is essential for maintaining defensive solidity and successfully transitioning between different defensive shapes. It is tough to assess this on TV, but Nelsson's performances suggest that he does develop understanding and coordination with his teammates in defensive situations.

Q&A

What areas could Victor Nelsson work on to improve his game?

  1. Positional Awareness: While Nelsson generally demonstrates good positioning, there are moments where he can be caught out of position, leaving gaps in the defensive line. Continued work on reading the game and maintaining optimal positioning will help him become even more effective.

  2. Decision Making: Although Nelsson is generally composed on the ball, there are instances where he can be prone to making rushed decisions under pressure. Enhancing his decision-making ability, particularly when under intense scrutiny, will help him make even better choices in crucial moments. The Tottenham 1st XI sports psychologist could help with this.

  3. Concentration: Like many players, Nelsson can occasionally experience lapses in concentration. Maintaining focus for the entirety of matches and minimizing costly errors will be important for his development as a defender.

  4. Aggressiveness in Challenges: While Nelsson is a strong tackler, there are times when he could be more assertive in challenges, especially when contesting for the ball in physical duels. Developing a more aggressive approach in key defensive situations can further strengthen his defensive impact.

  5. Leadership Qualities: As he continues to progress in his career, developing leadership qualities will be valuable for Nelsson. Taking command of the defensive line, providing vocal instructions, and organizing the team's defensive shape can elevate his influence on the pitch.

I shouldn't have to say this, but I will.
  • Tottenham have a series of centre-back targets
  • All players are sounded out, not just the preferred option
  • No bids are ever made without a player saying yes he is interested in joining
  • The club do not work on one signing and if it doesn;t come off, look around and consider who might be next (it's incredible that some think this is how big business behaves
Let's hypothetically assume Spurs have 6 options for a position, they will sound out all 6 before talking in detail to any one of them.

The club has to establish the rough cost of each deal, including the wages the player would require over 5 years, image rights, all agents' fees and all sundry costs.

Every transfer affects the money available for every other transfer and remember a club can now only be spending 70% of it's income on transfer fees, wages, 1st team coaches wages and all agents' fees by 2025/26, so that affects every transfer now.

Well there you have it, a Danish international who could potentially be a bargain buy to replace one of our current centre-backs.
