Summer Transfer Window Day 13

Summer Transfer Window Day 13

Good morning folks, a day off and nothing has changed but there are always new readers in need of a catch up.

Welcome to the Summer Transfer Window Day 13 and if you haven't read Day 7 yet, you need to, as this gives an overall broad picture of a Summer Transfer Window (Day 7) from a Spurs perspective and what it involves. It will enhance your understanding of the process.

Spurs Transfer Reminders

Spurs want business done before we travel to South Korea early July for a short pre-season tour that sold 66,000 tickets in 25 minutes for the first game.

This is an important tour, obviously from the fanbase perspective, but from a playing perspective.

Foreign clubs often go on a training camp holiday and this is effectively our training camp in the sun. It helps to stimulate the mind being in a new location and away from the everyday facilities, even if they are world class.

Alessandro Bastoni remains the first choice left centre-back and with Inter Milan chairman, Giuseppe Marotta, saying centre-backs are easier to replace than strikers, reports suggest we will have another try before we buy an alternative.

Personally, I do not see them selling him now and feel this is dead in the water.

Leeds United winger Raphinha only wants to join Barcelona, understandably, you don't turn them down when they come calling do you.

Spurs are seeking a forward who can play across all three positions, rather than an out and out striker, but defence is more of a priority right now, which allows us more detailed knowledge of what is left in the two pots (transfer and wages) to spend.

Richarlison is out top target but the money being asked by Everton is stupid money, obviously priced not to sell. The player himself wants to leave, it's Everton's version of the Harry Kane saga.

This one looks as though it will drag on so we are looking at alternatives, Raphinha being one.

Steven Bergwijn will end up at Ajax. They are aware, as other clubs are, that we must shift players, that they are surplus to requirements and won't be in our next Premier League squad.

This is the downside of the buying early approach as it minimises transfer fees for players you want to sell.

As reported a while back now, we have been in discussions with Antony but will he join his former Ajax manager at Manchester United? He is more of a player we can cover both wings.

Kulusevski is an attacking midfield option and Son, despite being knocked by our own fans all the time, has an excellent record standing in for Kane as a centre-forward.

Bearing that in mind, we want someone who brings the versatility to cover positions in the case of injury, as Son, Kane and Kulusevski are our main three.

We may now turn out attention to Gabriel Jesus, who was offered to us before the summer transfer window opened and is being pushed through the media by his agent to link with Spurs.

List of transfer fees Spurs seek

  • Ndombele (NHG) - £26m, age 25, contract ends 2025
  • Lo Celso (NHG) - £26m, age 26, contract ends 2025
  • Emerson Royal (NHG) - £20m+, age 24, contract ends 2026
  • Rodon (HG) - loan or £12m perhaps, age 24, contract ends 2025
  • Reguilón (NHG) - £26m, age 25 contract ends 2025
  • Winks (HG) - £25m, age 26, contract ends 2024
  • Bergwijn (NHG) - £26m, age 24, contract ends 2025
  • Omoli (HG) - (Premier League 2 or loan)
  • 5 NHG (non-homegrown, 3 HG (homegrown)
  • Total - approx £141m
Additionally:
  • Gollini - loan spell finished (NHG)
  • Carter-Vickers (HG) - sold to Celtic £6m + £4m potential add-ons
  • Jack Clarke (HG) - loan or sale, U-21 status
So far, only Cameron Carter-Vickers has been sold with £6m income plus add-ons in the future.

A lot of clubs are looking at loans and low ball offers. I reported the loan offer with option to buy offer from Atlético Madrid for right-back Emerson Royal in the Summer Transfer Window Day 10 piece (opens in new window).

Villarreal are not currently negotiating for Giovanni Lo Celso, they are £10m away from our valuation, we have offered him to Atlético Madrid.

There is a lot of interest in Harry Winks, but again it is £10m away from our valuation or loan offers, which may be the final solution, we'll see.

He is homegrown so should come with a premium price, just for the homegrown fact.

Once again, this isn't the first window, he has been told to find himself another club. In previous summers he has hung on and stayed.

Mourinho didn't fancy him, Nuno didn't fancy him and Conte doesn't want him, despite saying during the season he was reliable etc etc etc, just shows half of what those in football say is PR bullshit for fans or players benefit.

Three managers haven't wanted him, 3 managers have wanted him out, he will go either on loan or be sold, but he will not be in the Spurs squad next season.

We have discussed a lot of swap deals but nothing has come of any of them yet, Winks (various Premier League clubs), Emerson Royal (Atlético Madrid), Reguilón (Juventus), Lo Celso (Villarreal, Atlético Madrid), Ndombele (Inter), Bergwijn (Ajax).

As discussed on Day 11, there is a massive amount of groundwork that has to go into the preparation for a transfer window, discussing outline deals, establishing if a player would be happy coming to Spurs, what they would be seeking from a move and listed you 40 deals, that were the tip of the iceberg.

What we do not do is concentrate on one deal and when that doesn't happen start afresh. We simply move on to a target we already have had initial discussions with, or rather their agent, and begin more concrete discussions.

Agents and clubs all know how the transfer window works, all clubs operate the same way so agents are busy people in a complex industry.

As it stands, it is as expected and what I have maintained all along, our right-wingbacks for next season will be Matt Doherty and Djed Spence.

I posted on Twitter that the hold up on the Spence deal is the sell on clause, Middlesbrough want 25% and their chairman is a tough negotiator like Daniel Levy.

You see, he isn't the only tough negotiator in football, it's rather naive to think he is!

Joe Rodon is another who will not be in the Spurs Premier League squad, but he is a young player with potential and a Welsh international, who therefore has an increasable value.

For that reason he is likely to go out on loan to a Premier League club, and Nottingham Forest are very interested, to gain Premier League experience, get playing time and hopefully increase his transfer value.

It is World Cup year and Wales have qualified for the first time in 64 years, so Rodon wants to be playing regular football.

What a great swansong for Gareth Bale and everything he has achieved in his career, delighted to see them there.

Tottenham are looking for a key centre-back with proven experience, like Bastoni, Bremer and Gvardiol, plus a lesser profile and almost certainly younger player to develop and increase in value.

Players like 22-year-old (23 in August) Evan Ndicka and a youngster Spurs really like that I have drip fed to you several times now, 19-year-old (20 in September) Illya Zabarnyi of Dynamo Kyiv.

It is always a quiet time while players are on holiday thus you get a lot of guesswork stories rehashing old news and fooling the obsessed to earn advertising clicks.

See you soon folks.
