French mathematician Pierre de Fermat and Dele Alli

Spurs-Sports-Psychologist

Like most Spurs supporters I wish Dele all the best and hop he re-finds his best form at Everton.

I was strolling through some literature and came across a story that you can equate to Dele, to David Bentley and the rest.

It is the story of a French mathematician.

A certain Pierre de Fermat (1607 - 1665).

Now he was engrossed in maths, it was everything, his leisure, his fun, much like football is for children and some adults today.

Some of his most important contributions on the subject appeared in the margins of books or in small notes to his friends.

A bit like Humphrey our of Death in Paradise, scribbling on any scrap of paper he can find, except for de Fermat, usually margins.

One day, he was reading Diophantus’s Arithmetic and a thought occurred to him so he started scribbling it down in the margin.

“The equation xn + yn = zn, where x,y, and z are positive integers, has no solution if n is greater than 2”.

“I have discovered a most remarkable proof, but this margin is too narrow to contain it”.

He lived over 25 years after this an never wrote down what it was anywhere.

That became known after his death as “Fermat’s last theorem”.

It remained unsolved after that for a further THREE HUNDRED YEARS.

Andrew Wiles solved it in 1994 and his explanation took 129 pages!

That scribble in the margin is Dele's football career while he goes off to play, have a drink with a gangster and start posting pictures on social media, getting caught up in being wanted to be liked, get attention, that social media is all about.

Then when it came to football again, Dele couldn't find the margin he had scribbled his notes in.

Don't put off what you can do now or you might never do it.

It has come too late for Dele unfortunately but Spurs are now advertising for a 1st Team Psychologist, just what I have been banging on about for years.

It's a first step.

Next is to climb the stairs.

How psychologist is used is important.

If a player does not see that they have a problem, which 99% won't, then they won't voluntarily go to the psychologist.

The players need to be trained that it is a part and parcel of training...

You train your feet so why shouldn't you train your head?

Afterall, your head tells your feet what to do.

Improve the decision making of your head...

And you improve your feet.

I suspect the psychologist will deal with the off field issues, the issues away from football that trouble every player.

Spurs must begin a programme of each player having a weekly chat with the 1st team psychologist.

They must find out what truly motivates the individual, because trust me, the individual WILL NOT know...

He might think he does...

But it is often something entirely different.

Feed that information to Antonio Conte.

Remember another recent post, how Conte wants players with emotional intelligence?

That to is the domain of the psychologist.

They need to teach players how to control their thought processes during a game.

Need to teach them how to react mentally to a mistake.

When you see a player making a mistake, then another, then another, it is because he is not in control mentally...

His emotions are ruling his head...

When his head should be ruling his emotions.

I don't know how Spurs are going to use this psychologist but I'm very excited by the possibilities.

The job description says:- To create and lead a clearly defined sports psychology program specifically with our First Team Players and Staff.

Specifications include:
  • Work closely with the coaching and multidisciplinary support staff to effectively align performance phycology with the performance needs of the coaches and athletes.
  • Support the development of strategies to encourage positive team dynamics and high performance under pressure.
  • Contribute to the development, delivery and monitoring of integrated performance psychology.
  • Thinks ahead, generates innovative ideas.

Well I certainly develop innovative ideas beyond the masses, don't I.

I said I could improve the playing staff and our coaching, more than once and it is a great boost to see what I have been promoting take its first steps.

It is going to be a bloody happy day when the appointment is made.

Now, Conte needs to instigate some vision training for Oliver Skipp and Harry Winks, it'll only add to their game.

Until next time, enjoy the day as much as I will.
