Tottenham Talk on Ndombele and Rennes 2nd Half

Ndombele-v-Rennes

Good day folks and welcome to another edition of Tottenham Talk, this time on a certain Tanguy Ndombele.

Spurs played OK on Thursday, with seven changes from the Crystal Palace game but our negative fans seem to like to be on a downer and they only see what players do on the ball it seems.

Most of the game is off-the-ball, so why do they not take that into account?

You can not take the opinion of someone seriously if they are only taking into account the 5 minutes a player spends on the ball and ignores the 85 minutes they don't.

All I read is praise for Tanguy Ndombele and yes he looked good on the ball again, but that isn't his weakness is it.

We all know he has talent on the ball but that has to be weighed up against what he does without the ball and against Rennes it was to give away a goal.

Harsh you might say, you probably totally missed it, but just dangling a leg and immediately being out of the game simply isn't good enough defending.

Passed Ndombele on the right, they played a one-two around Skipp and curled the shot into the corner of the net.

But they should never have got past Ndombele so easily.

What good is defending like that against Chelsea?

I would suggest, while we are trying to find the best position for Bryan Gil that we try to find the best position for Tanguy Ndombele too.

It needs to be a position where his lazy defending is minimised, so should that be further forward, do we need a diamond midfield to accommodate him, but then we would lose our wingers and where would Son then play?

If we are to play Ndombele on the right side of a three then his defendingneeds to be better, his enthusiasm to defend needs to be better and his getting up and down the pitch needs to be better.

It is not the job of the team to adjust to his approach, is it up to him to change his approach to suit the team requirements.

He is playing for himself, not his team and teammates.

That's mental of course.

Snippet

Rooney: “I remember once when I got to training the day after a loss, I was still so angry and went into the locker room with Michael Carrick. We found Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba dancing to the music. Our mentality was different than that of the modern players.”

Rennes v Spurs 2nd Half

I looked at the first half on the UEFA Europa Conference League opening group game on Friday and it wasn't as bad as some are making out.

Now I'll look at the second half and 3 minutes into it the Rennes played who tackled and injured Lucas Moura from behind should have at least received a yellow card.

It was an atrocious tackle that got nowhere near the ball.

Our passing around the 50 minute mark was far too slow, far too laboured, each player seemed to need to control the ball, look around for who to pass it too, then pass.

I have written about vision before, you should know where you can pass it BEFORE you even receive the ball.

This reactive play is slower and easier to defend against than the mentally faster and therefore quicker and more dangerous proactive football.

A lovely determined run by Ndombele and a one-two with Kane was a world away from the dangle a leg in defence and give away a goal Ndombele first half incident.

Once again this highlights the need to have that level of determination and motivation at BOTH ends of the pitch.

Rennes were running through and passing through our midfield with consummate ease to create chances for themselves, a free header in our box and a shot over the bar.

Just like the Palace game, Spurs didn't have control of the midfield again and our crossing from the right was woeful.

Their goal, well down to Tanganga letting the ball go through hi legs, should never have happened, shocking defending.

75 minutes and a crossfield ball from Ndombele to Doherty who advanced and spots Højbjerg free and puts in a good ball to him, partially cut out by a lunging backtracking Rennes midfielder which unfortunately for them puts the ball behind their centre-backs and on a plate for the advancing Højbjerg to tap home.

After 78 minutes, Dele came on for Ndombele who despite that defensive lapse showed a lot with the ball and deserves praise for his performance.

I think playing in France helped him, I think he wanted to remind the French what a player he is so the question is will he take that mentality into the Premier League now?

We can only hope so.

A couple of minutes later and they make better use of a throw-in than we do which results in a ball into the centre-forward laid back centrally for a shot with Skipp nowhere.

It wasn't a bad game, we have areas to improve and the players are learning the system so there is no need for the doom and gloom from the Twitter kids.

A point away from home against the second favourites for the group is fine.

Well that's it folks, short and sweet, just like me.
