Tottenham Talk on Friday 3rd Sept

PL-POTM

Good morning on another fine morning to be a Top of the Premier League Spurs supporter, why wouldn't you be happy and positive.

If you can't be happy and positive now, then you never will be.

You will recall that many of our fans haven't grasped the significance of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League and it's bags of money.

Clubs generating money is basically the be all and end all of winning trophies regularly.

Arsenal enjoyed it for years and therefore had a financial advantage over us.

Players would say yes I'll sign for Spurs, if no UEFA Champions League club come in for me.

It wasn't, and isn't, as many see it, just throw more money from the money tree at them and at clubs to sell us players.

Life doesn't work like that.

No business can operate in such an irresponsible way.

Arsenal, with no Champions League money are struggling to get back into it, they are struggling to even get into Europe.

They had Willian on a stupid £400,000 a week, they have others who have been a noose around their neck.

Currently they sit bottom of the Premier League without having scored a goal, despite having prolific goal scorer Aubameyang in their ranks.

Yes, I appreciate getting Champions League football isn't a trophy, but it is a step in the right direction.

As Spurs have heard from several of our targets this transfer window, they want a club with UCL football.

Whether fans like it or not, there is a balance between maintaining a sustainable football club and spending on transfers, but more importantly, wages.

Spurs finished 7th and if you listen to some, the world has collapsed, yet Arsenal are bottom of the league, we haven't sunk to that.

Arsenal’s current squad cost a stunning £495.95m to assemble, more than the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Juventus.

Proof that, it's how you spend the money you have that's important, not just signing a name.

Fans don't seem to appreciate that players can improve either.

Sanchez has improved but he has still been beaten easily in the box at the byline, which for me makes him a backup player in this squad with Romero eventually taking over from him.

Dier, as I have been saying, is the better of the two, the more solid of the two and that is shown by his Premier League Player of the Month nomination.

To add to that, Head Coach Nuno has been nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month Award, for which he must be a certainty, given Spurs have won three and not even conceded a goal with a squad some of our own fans were writing off.

Dier started last season solid, alongside Alderweireld and were keeping clean sheets too, it wasn't until January that the mistakes started creeping in and he was being blamed for others mistakes too.

The whole defence including Lloris seemed to stop trusting each other and lost that bit of confidence in each other and that kills any defence.

So far, so good, while we integrate new signings as well.

I'll keep the post short today to rest my eye further, I need to recover after the Summer Transfer Window.

Tottenham Hotspur Blog News (THBN) ended up the transfer window with 147,586 views in August, a rip roaring success.

Healthy figures so thanks for reading.

I'm looking forward to taking it a little easier for a couple of weeks, unless something piques my interest.

By all means keep asking the questions, I welcome them from positive fans who understand the bigger picture so let's all keep smiling and enjoy the season.

To finish today, let's talk Serge Aurier.

Obviously Tottenham have been in regular contact with Serge Aurier who asked to leave but no buyer could be found.

Clubs in Europe were not going to pay him £60,000+ a week, they can't afford it.

It is pretty clear he didn't want to take a salary cut and with international breaks, plus the Africa Cup of Nations in January, plus possible isolation after all of these, how much would he actually be available for?

We now hear he wants to stay in this country.

International break 4-14 Oct, then 8-16 November..

So if he played all these, had to isolate for 10 days each time and then had to get fit again, he might be available to play for 1 week in two months.

If you add the current break, then he might be available for 2 weeks in three months.

Add in the Africa Cup of Nations, a month, isolation and regaining fitness and you lose him for another month and a half at least, so between now and the middle of February, he is potentially only available for 2 weeks and the month of December.

What use is that to a club?

Now I haven't checked the red listed countries, I'm just giving a worst case scenario to make a point.

Serge Aurier

It was Aurier through his agent that requested Spurs release him from his contract.

The club will have obviously known that when signing Emerson Royal from Barcelona.

Tottenham agreed and ripped up his contract, presumably not having to pay him a lump sum to leave, although no doubt there has been some financial arrangement agreed.

Not costing a new club a transfer fee means he can ask for a bigger signing on bonus and a larger salary, is that the driving force?

Miralem Pjanić

FC Barcelona has found a temporary customer for Miralem Pjanić.

The playmaker will be loaned to Besiktas Istanbul until the end of the season. The Turkish club will pay €2.75 million from the 31-year-old's net salary, they have no purchase option.

This is the 12th player Barcelona have given away this window.

Pjanić wanted to return to Juventus and they wanted him but his salary was too high.

He was offered to Tottenham with a few days left in the window but he wasn't entertained for the same reason.

Transfer Money

Accounting wise, transfer sales income goes directly against the current financial year.

Transfer purchase amounts are written off over the contract period of the players.

If Spurs buy a player for £30m on a 5-year contract, then that goes in the accounts as £6m spent, for each of the next 5 years.

Thus each year you have to take into account what you are already paying for as well as what you are going to spend and what you are committing yourself to.

Dane Scarlett

Dane Scarlett scored a penalty for England U-19's as they beat Italy U-19's 2-0.

Stadium Fire

The Official Announcement.
“Following a number of inaccurate and sensationalist reports, we can confirm that Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is operational as normal after a small fire, caused by an air compressor, broke out in one of the kitchens this morning.”
