RIP Jimmy Greaves
RIP Jimmy Greaves
He signed for Chelsea in 1956 and the following season set a record by scoring 114 goals for their youth team.
He won the FA Youth Cup with them and scored 124 goals in just 4 seasons for Chelsea.
He made his senior debut at the start of the 1957/8 season at the age of 17, scoring in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham and amazingly, on the day he passes away, we are playing them again.
Greaves scored in every major debut in his entire career, a quite phenomenal achievement.
He is the youngest ever player to score 100 league goals, having done so by the age of just 20.
To avoid the maximum wage restriction, he signed for AC Milan in 1961 for £80,000, however he didn't settle abroad and soon returned to England in 1962, signing for Tottenham Hotspur.

He still scored 9 goals in 10 Serie A games while in Italy.
Spurs paid £99,999, as our then manager Bill Nicholson didn't want Greaves to be burdened with the tag of being the first £100,000 footballer.

He played his first game in a Spurs shirt for the reserve team on 9 December 1961, and scored twice in a 4–1 win over Plymouth Argyle Reserves at Home Park.
Greaves scored a hat-trick on his first team debut, including a flying scissor kick, in a 5–2 win over Blackpool at White Hart Lane.
For three successive seasons Greaves was the leading First Division striker, something he achieved on six occasions.
In all, he scored 112 goals in 157 First Division games.
After retiring from the game, Greaves went on to enjoy a successful career in broadcasting.
I fondly remember him as a comical character working alongside Liverpool legend Ian St John on Saint and Greavsie from 1985 to 1992.
He also made regular appearances on TV-am and worked on several sport programmes on ITV, including Sporting Triangles, Star Soccer, The Saturday Show, World of Sport, On The Ball.

He was England's fourth highest international goalscorer (44 goals), Tottenham Hotspur's highest ever goalscorer (266 goals), the highest goalscorer in the history of English top-flight football (357 goals).
He scored after just 3 minutes when Tottenham won the FA Cup in 1962 and scored two against Atletico Madrid in the final of the 1963 Cup Winners’ Cup.
Jimmy made his debut for England in 1959 and scored 44 goals in 57 games, scoring 6 hat-tricks, which is still a record today, after scoring 13 goals in 12 Under 23 internationals.
