Tottenham Talk on Wednesday 25th Aug

Cristiano-Ronaldo

Good morning Spurs folk and welcome to Tottenham Talk on Wednesday 25th August.

Érik Lamela averaged just over two goals per season for Spurs in the Premier League. He’s currently averaging a goal every half an hour for Sevilla in La Liga.

His second game and he scored his third goal for Sevilla, this time with his RIGHT foot!

Lamela came on in the 46th minute and scored the winner for Sevilla (0-1) right at the death, after a rebounded shot off the post gifted him an easy tap-in.

The Argentine winger banged in the goals in Italy and is now doing so in Spain, which goes to show his style didn't suit the Premier League, demonstrating not all players can excel, however good they are.

The Real Betis manager and former manager of Manchester City, Manuel Pellegrini said of Spanish football at the weekend:

“La Liga is the slowest league in Europe, with the least amount of football played. People pay money to watch a show and we're not giving it to them. The most time-wasting, the most dives, it's pathetic and disgraceful.”

Former Gunners boss, Arsene Wenger, spoke to beIN Sport about his old club Arsenal, who sit 19th in the Premier League after the first 2 games:

"This is not the Arsenal I once built. They abused me, now look where they are. The true colours of North London are showing, and that's the colour white. You would never see Tottenham being this much of a small club like Arsenal are."

Gareth Bale scored his first Real Madrid goal since January 2020 after 5 minutes vs Levante, his last LaLiga goal came in September 2019.

Tottenham Transfer Talk

With a few days to go in the window, 6 including today, I thought I'd best give you a quick round up and explain why some deals have not been signed, even though they are agreed.

It hinges on the players going out and quotas allowed in a Premier League and European squad because they are different. Ben Davies is not England Association trained, he is Welsh Association trained and the same applies to Joe Rodon.

Spurs could loan out several players to create space at the end of the window, if we can't sell the individuals.

That's an option, but who is going to pay their wages, we wouldn't want to be paying part of them if we can help it, therefore we'll use the whole of the window to try and sell them.

Donny van de Beek

Spurs are interested in 24-year-old (25 next April) Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek as the window trundles it's way to a close in a week.

Luis Díaz

Tottenham are interested in 24-year-old (25 next January) Colombian international (18 caps, 2 goals) left-sided midfielder or left winger Luis Díaz, currently playing at Portuguese side Porto.

At the moment Spurs have the maximum 17 non-homegrown players so need to offload before bringing anyone in.

Moussa Sissoko

Juventus are seriously considering the possibility of a central midfielder swap between 22-year-old (23 on 28th) Weston McKennie and 32-year-old (33 next August) Moussa Sissoko say Italian news outlet TuttoSport.

What for?

McKennie is proven in Serie A, played most of the games last season, but Juventus want to bring back 31-year-old (32 next April) Miralem Pjanić from Barcelona.

Do they see Sissoko as being happy playing second fiddle as his squad cover?

Highly unlikely.

Paratici is none to keen to be buying from Juventus, he doesn't want to be seen to be plundering his former club.

Lautaro Martínez

Lautaro Martínez went up in price during the window and there would be an Inter fan meltdown if they sold him as well as Romelu Lukaku, which makes his sale very unlikely now.

Spurs may return for the 24-year-old (25 next August) next summer depending upon the Harry Kane situation then.

Dušan Vlahović

Dušan Vlahović was our choice to replace Harry Kane at 40m (£34.18m - US$46.94m - AUS$64.82m).

However Fiorentina did not want to sell, he was happy to remain there for another year, there was further interest in him, particularly from Atlético Madrid possible, depending on Kane, if not now then possible in the future.

Spurs will be keeping a close eye on him this season, you can be sure of that.

Pape Matar Sarr

A deal has been struck with Ligue 1 outfit Metz for 18-year-old (19 in September) Pape Matar Sarr.

Metz need the money, so why hasn't the deal gone through, why hasn't pen been put to paper?

Is it because Metz would prefer a loan back deal and we wouldn't?

No, it's because we have our full non-homegrown quota (17) so to bring him into the Spurs squad, we need to offload a non-homegrown player first, so either Tanguy Ndombele, Moussa Sissoko or Serge Aurier.

The easy solution is to sign him, but with a season-long loan back to Metz so he joins us next summer, but we get him under our control.

This deal has now been reported, since this was written, as all agreed, a 6-year deal with the first year back on loan at Metz.

Nahitan Nández

A verbal deal in principle was struck with Serie A club Cagliari for 25-year-old (26 in December) righr-sided midfielder Nahitan Nández.

Paratici then moved onto Pape Matar Sarr so Nández is now simply one of Paratici's alternatives.

The Italian press still suggest we are very interested in him and that he would cost about €23.5m (£20.11m - US$27.61m - AUS$38.03m) in the last few days of the window.

Tanguy Ndombele

Tanguy is difficult to shift on his wages and with us needing to cover our remaining costs on him.

There is a footballer in there when he can be bothered, when everything is going his way, when he is guaranteed a starting berth and his ego is pandered to, in other words he is shown love and told how wonderful he is.

Fine with the ball, dreadfully lazy without it, for us anyway.

Plenty of interest in him and offers coming in so surely we are going to agree to one of them, but will Ndombele as his ego dictates he wants an elite level club, like Bayern Munich.

Houssem Aouar

Fabio Paratici is a big fan of Houssem Aouar and again he has discussed a deal in principle for the 23-year-old (24 next June) Lyon central midfielder but both sides couldn't come to an agreement.

With days running out, Lyon are now prepared to consider a loan deal with an obligation to buy next summer.

A year ago, Lyon turned down €45m (£38.52m - US$52.85m - AUS$72.87m) for Aouar when the French club turned down the advances of Juventus, Bayern Munich, PSG and Arsenal.

He could go for less than half that now.

Harry Winks

Harry Winks wants to stay at Tottenham and fight for his place.

Selling him would NOT enable us to buy a non-homegrown player, thus unless we had an English-trained player lined up, there is little point selling him, as he helps the homegrown quota domestically and in Europe.

Likely to remain at Spurs now but it is thought Newcastle United will make a late bid for him.

Everton bid £12m (€14.02m - US$16.47m - AUS$22.73m) earlier in the window.

Takehiro Tomiyasu

The deal for Takehiro Tomiyasu has been lined for for a while now, both with the player and Bologna.

However, our non-homegrown quota is preventing us from finalising the deal, we haven't managed to move on Sissoko, Aurier or Ndombele yet.

We have to maintain balance in the squad, so really we need to move Serge Aurier on to sign him, otherwise we are selling a midfielder and leaving ourselves short in that area to overload ourselves with right-backs.

Matt Doherty

Spurs have offered Matt Doherty back to Wolves as he hasn't been able to cut the mustard at Tottenham and we are struggling to shift Serge Aurier.

We want to bring in Takehiro Tomiyasu and have him and Japhet Tanganga competing for the right-back slot thus both Aurier and Doherty can go, but we need Aurier out to bring Tomiyasu in.

Noni Madueke

Noni Madueke is a former Spurs Academy product so is homegrown.

He is a homegrown option we have looked at, even though he is playing abroad in the Eredivisie for PSV.

The price tag for the 19-year-old (20 next March) winger is off-putting, at 40m (£34.18m - US$46.94m - AUS$64.82m) and we have a number of non-homegrown players we are looking at in his position as well.

Pau Torres

Simple one this, Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres wants Champions League football to further his international ambitions now he represents Spain so is not an option for us this window.

João Palhinha

Plenty of press talk surrounding João Palhinha and he is a defensive midfielder that Paratici has a provisional agreement with but what the press seem to have missed when reporting an imminent deal is the non-homegrown quota again.

Spurs can't sign a bunch of non-homegrown players, we have to pick and choose who fits what position best, who is a priority and shift some players before all our plans can be put into operation, hence nothing is happening.

We also have other non-homegrown option in his position.

According to the Portuguese newspaper the Record, Tottenham have 'promised' to make a bid for Palhinha at around €20m (£17.09m - US$23.47m - AUS$32.41m).

Kurt Zouma

Chelsea centre-back was an option for Spurs and despite what the press and fans say, Chelsea would have been happy to sell him to us.

Dávinson Sánchez decision to stay and fight for a place has altered our centre-back position thinking.

Again he is non-homegrown, thus we can't sign a non-homegrown replacement, or indeed any replacement, having already signed Cristian Romero.

Mikkel Damsgaard

it is all quiet surrounding Tottenham and Mikkel Damsgaard for the same reason as others, we have no non-homegrown places available for the Danish winger to occupy.

Sampdoria are prepared to sell him, we are prepared to buy and have had initial discussions to gauge what the Italian side want, what Damsgaard wants.

Japhet Tanganga

Japhet's future was up in the air and we considered sending him on loan to get some valuable first team experience.

He got the nod for the first home game against Manchester City, excelled against Raheem Sterling and £100m man Jack Grealish which has convinced everyone we should keep him at the club now, despite concerns over the number of small injuries he seems to pick up.

Serge Aurier

There is nothing new to report on Serge Aurier.

He wants to leave, we want to sell but nobody wants to pay his wages, thus he is still here.

Adama Traoré

Yes Adama Traoré is on our list and yes there is a lot of press talk, but that is all it is.

Nuno loves him, Nuno would sign him tomorrow, but others are not as convinced and he is not homegrown either so without non-homegrown players going out, there isn't any room for him to come in.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

Another young exciting winger but non-homegrown, so the same issues as many other players at the moment.

His agent has recently been in Russia trying to get the Georgian's €20m (£17.09m - US$23.47m - AUS$32.41m) price reduced by Rubin Kazan.

The same non-homegrown issue and competes with the other options for the winger berth.

Ilaix Moriba

Put quite simply, his wage demands are too high and the package to sign him on a 5-year contract would amount to a ridiculous 100m for an 18-year-old (19 next January).

WE have spoken to his agent but this is going nowhere.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Well I'd swap Cristiano Ronaldo for Tanguy Ndombele or Moussa Sissoko, wouldn't you.

Best we get through to the Europa Conference League group stages tomorrow night so we can offer him European football!
