Tottenham Talk on Wednesday 11th Aug - Lautaro Martínez Explanation

Lautaro-Martinez

Right, this Lautaro Martínez piece was going to form a part of Wednesday's post that I tweeted about on Monday afternoon and told you about in Tottenham Talk on Tuesday 10th Aug (opens in new window or visit THBN website).

However, with Fabrizio Romano tweeting to watch this deal, as I wrote over the weekend and on Monday, I thought I had better get this explanation out there to explain the situation, which I have to say is very complicated.

At the end, you'll hopefully see why you don't need to take a blind bit of notice of what Inter say, they aren't basically running the club at the moment.

Lautaro Martínez

Most journalists have written off Spurs signing Lautaro Martínez.

The Argentinian striker is under contract at Inter Milan until 2023 but has reportedly told them that he will not be signing a new contract.

That gives them a dilemma because if they keep him then he enters the final year of his contract and his transfer value plummets.

Inter can't afford for that to happen, their financial mess will still be around next summer.

This summer they can still command a decent £60m fee for him which is why this deal is not dead yet.

His agents decision might be to stay, but that is his agent, Alejandro Camano, talking, not Martínez. It is the usual PR stuff.

The 23-year-old (24 in August) likes the project Paratici has outlined to him and the chance of playing in the Premier League.

As reported, the owners may decide to sell him anyway.

Players who put in transfer requests lose their entitlement to a pay-off for leaving so a player who doesn't and is sold by the club is entitled to a pay-off.

Inter are trying to sign both 35-year-old (36 next March) Edin Džeko and 26-year-old (27 in August) Joaquin Correa, who has stopped talks with Everton amid Inter interest.

Three strikers for a club in financial turmoil?

We await the owners (Sunning Group) decision.

The reports from Italy are not as cut and dried as our press seem to believe, there are reports that suggest Inter saying no does not mean Martínez not leaving, while other reports suggest we have offered, wait for it, €85m + €10m add-ons.

As far as I'm aware we offered €70m, and Atlético Madrid offered €50m.

The sales of Lukaku (Chelsea) and Hakimi (PSG) have been made with the approval of the Oaktree fund who Inter are indebted to to the tune of €275m according to journalist Carlo Festa of Il Sole 24 Ore.

There is another twist for you, the Inter board have to seek the permission of an investment firm they owe money to to do anything.

You get the picture this is not a straight forward situation and not a straight forward debt situation they have got themselves into.

The Nerazzurri (Inter) will pay
€2m to Roma and offer a two-year contract to experienced Bosnian striker Edin Džeko. The replacement for the Giallorossi (Roma) could be Mauro Icardi on a loan, with part of his salary paid by PSG.

You want another twist?

The control of the entire Suning brand is no longer in the hands of the Zhang family, it founder is not even the President anymore, yet Steven Zhang is currently the Chairman at Inter, so he has to do what the Suning Group tell him.

I remind you, the Suning Group are in heavy debt and their restructuring does not include football any more.

If they tell him to sell Martínez, Zhang will have to sell.

According to the Corriere della Sera, "After he has been sold, there is the green light to open up to the disposal of all, without exception."

FC Inter News say it is the plan of Zhang to sell all players for whom he receives an offer.

News yesterday that 33-year-old (34 next May) Inter midfielder Radja Nainggolan has terminated his contract with the Italian club, with severance pay, meaning it is with the clubs agreement.

Cagliari and Inter were working on a deal to transfer him but Cagliari are another Italian club with no money basically.

Martínez has spoken with several fellow Argentinian countrymen to get their views on life at Spurs, new signing Cristian Romero, Giovanni Lo Celso, former players Juan Foyth and Érik Lamela, plus former boss Mauricio Pochettino.

He has done his homework on us and is keen on a move.

Well that's it folks.
