Tottenham Talk on Tuesday 10th Aug

Tottenham-Talk

Hello folks, welcome to another day, another post on Tottenham Hotspur Blog News (THBN), this time Tottenham Talk on Tuesday 10th Aug.

You must all know by now that clubs in Europe are in a far worse position than clubs in the Premier League, even though we have lost around £200m Daniel Levy tells us.

Spurs have commercial deals coming, the club has a Managing Director of Football who is surely impressing every Spurs fan and a European market ripe for us to exploit.

Naturally we want to move on our deadwood and keep our best players, as does everyone else, but our deadwood are on higher wages, hence a lot of clubs want loan deals where we want cold hard cash.

As explained in a Joe Hart piece, clubs charge a loan fee that cover their seasons costs for that player.

Thus if we do end up loaning players we would look to cover most, if not all of our costs, depending upon what wages that club can afford.

The desire to move on players seems to me to be more certain under Paratici, you feel like he will make sure it happens.

Of course we would rather sell and in every transfer deal we are offering the players we want to move on.

I have said it many times, around 50% of transfers take place in the last 2 weeks of every summer transfer window.

Players wait until then to see what options they have, clubs wait until then to see if they are going to get the right offers for their players and wait until then to see if they can get the players they want to buy, cheaper.

Spurs fans moan, but you can only get players in early, if you pay the wanted fee rather than your valuation and the player is happy with the challenge you offer and more importantly, the standard of football you offer, i.e. Champions League.

It is not all about money for a player, usually these days, Champions League football comes first.

If you can't get that somewhere in Europe, then you look at what other options you have at other clubs.

A club like Spurs can offer to double or treble wages and still keep them reasonable by Premier League standards, but as we see with Jules Koundé, that is not enough, UEFA Champions League football comes first.

Again the dilemma, do you wait in the hope you get your man or sign someone else and hear the anti-Levy smattering moan he isn't buying the managers first choice?

Paratici does seem to have the gift of the gab as he is talking players into wanting to come to Spurs, Gil, Romero, Gollini and lately Ćaleta-Car and Martinez.

He isn't throwing money on wages around though, he has a wages budget to work to.

We are aiming to move players on and bring in better players on lower wages, around the £50,000 mark.

That ploy gives us room for annual increments for the player signing a contract extension which safeguards us, as we can command a fee or in the case of Harry Kane, hold him to his contract unless £200m is slapped on the table.

On that, I'll repeat, City offered £100m including players, not plus players as was widely reported.

The players they offered are on wages we wouldn't entertain and in some cases they wouldn't come to us anyway, even if we wanted them, which we don't.

Top quality players are on lower wages abroad so it is there the bargains are to be had.

There WILL be more players in, there WILL be more players out.

I covered Inter Milan's financial mire over the weekend but let me say, even after bringing £150m in through player sales, they are not out of the water yet, hence the belief we can get Martínez off them.

As I said yesterday, this deal is not dead in the water.

There is a financial decision for the owners to make, not the Inter board.

Question and Answer

Ok, yesterday I was asked a question in response to the days Tottenham Hotspur Blog News (THBN) post which I replied to but thought you all might to see the quick explanation.

QuestionThank you very interesting. So in this strange climate a prudent chairman would only sanction incomings that balance with outgoings. So if talk of 100 mill plus for two strikers are true does that mean HK deal is agreed in principle? Happier days Bob

Answer: No
1. I wrote a post on the refinancing of a loan and thus the fact we would have money this window. Spurs Have Money To Spend This Summer
2. The players we are bringing in are on lower wages than those going out so we are saving weekly on the wages bill.
3. The stadium will have spectators and generate more revenue.
4. Deals like the Romero deal are an initial loan, so we aren't paying until next summer.
5. Transfer payments are usually in instalments over the term of a players contract, so 50m euros for Romero for instance would be a 10m a year for 5 years. Not always the case but usually, sometimes over 3 years etc.
6. A stadium naming rights deal is expected imminently, in the final stages of negotiation.

Takehiro Tomiyasu

You can ignore all the press talking about transfer fee negotiations for Takehiro Tomiyasu between Bologna and Tottenham, they were concluded ages ago.

We weren't going to sign him ahead of the Olympics as we naturally wanted him to come through the tournament without serious injury first.

In addition we have been speaking with his national association, as we do with all signings, to understand where they stand on the use of him as an international, such as, can he miss certain friendlies during the season where plenty of travel is required?

When you sign a player you leave no stone unturned, you look into everything so there are not surprises down the line.

There are all sorts of off the field issues that hold up a transfer. If we can get the Japanese FA to agree to release him from certain international games, we will, but that discussion needs to happen before we sign him, not after.

We then know where we stand.

Kaio Jorge

Juventus have recently agreed a cut-price €3 million (£5.54m - US$3.53m - AUS$4.80m) deal for Kaio Jorge.

The Brazilian teenager's agent revealed that Liverpool and Tottenham were keen on the 19-year-old (20 next January) Santos centre-forward before he decided to join Juventus.

It shows we do scour the world and there is a lot of scouting and attempted recruiting action behind the scenes that fans do not know about.

Denis Zakaria

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Borussia Mönchengladbach Sporting Director Max Eberl discussed the future of 24-year-old (25 in November) defensive midfielder Denis Zakaria.

"Denis ruled out a contract extension last winter. He has the idea of possibly taking a new step this summer. There is a lot of enquiries but we have to see what happens in the next days and weeks.”

Tottenham, Manchester City, Juventus, Roma, Inter and Arsenal have all been linked with the Swiss international (34 caps, 3 goals, 3 assists).

Kvicha Kvaratskhelia

Tottenham have been linked for a second time to 20-year-old (21 next February) Rubin Kazan winger Kvicha Kvaratskhelia.

The Georgia international (8 caps, 3 goals, 2 assists) left-wingers agent has been speaking to the media in Georgia.

“I have to meet with the President of Rubin after August 12, and with an 85-90 per cent probability, Kvaratskhelia will change team and play in a very high level club in Europe.

“I can confirm there is serious interest from Tottenham. I can’t say anything new about Leeds, but there is also Juventus.”

Squad Depth

Injuries to the likes of Giovanni Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele demonstrated last season that the squad depth at Tottenham isn't good enough.

It isn't good enough just to have numbers, there needs to be quality replacements when injury strikes so that the guy who was unfortunately injured, has to fight for his place back.

That is not always the case at Tottenham when you have the like of Dele going missing for three years and Harry Winks not progressing since his ankle injury against Aston Villa a few years back.

We have to be careful with the non-homegrown quotas, but with European clubs hit hard by the pandemic, there are bargains to be had to strengthen the Spurs squad.

Alfie Whiteman, Matt Doherty, Ben Davies, Joe Rodon, Japhet Tanganga, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Tobi Omole, Harry Winks, Dele and Harry Kane are the homegrown players currently at the club.

However, Cameron Carter-Vickers is likely to leave, Harry Winks is for sale and Japhet Tanganga may well go out on loan to get some game time.

That takes us down to 7 plus the uncertainty over Kane and is Davies homegrown for the UEFA Europa Conference League, he isn't for the UEFA Champions League?

Equally there are suggestions that Fabio Paratici doesn't rate Joe Rodon either.

If you look at the deals so far, we are basically saving wages, yet improving the quality of player.

OK, Bryan Gil is a youngster we are taking a chance on to replace Lamela but the end product from Lamela was rarely enough, when he wasn't injured.

Italians AC Milan are looking into signing our much maligned French international midfielder Moussa Sissoko and have begun talks.

Noni Madueke

The former Spurs academy player is on our radar, as reported recently, and he starred in the Dutch Super Cup as PSV easily overcame Ajax to lift the trophy.

He scored two of the goals amid the suggestion it would take £20m (£16.96m - US$23.50m - AUS$32.02m) for PSV to let him return to Spurs.

Yacine Adli

Journalist Santi Aouna is suggesting that Tottenham have made contact with 21-year-old (22 next July) Bordeaux attacking-midfielder Yacine Adli.

Adli has played 65 Ligue 1 games over 3,700 minutes, equivalent to 41.11 games, scoring 5 goals and having 8 assists.

The French U-20 international (5 caps, 0 goals, 1 assist) can also play as a central midfielder and is being followed by Lille and Arsenal as well, who have made an enquiry.

He was formerly at PSG and AC Milan are said to have submitted a €10m (£8.48m - US$11.75m - AUS$16.01m) bid for him.

PSG had a 20% (some outlets say 10%) sell-on clause inserted in his transfer contract when he joined Bordeaux in the summer of 2019 for £4.95m (5.41m - US$6.36m - AUS$8.67m).

I believe the French club are looking for €15m (£12.72m - US$17.62m - AUS$24.01m) for him.

Bordeaux finished 12th and successfully fought against an administrative relegation after ex-Lille owner Gérard Lopez took over.

Here are two scouting reports.

Incomings

As I said yesterday, Lautaro Martinez wants to join and a centre-back who was previously going to stay at his club may have had a change of heart and may be interested in coming to Tottenham now.

You will all be pleased, or you ought to be, he has been highly discussed before and he isn't from the Serie A.

We shall see, but I understand we are pursuing it again quietly, in other words, it's not all over the media.

Have a lovely day and tomorrow you'll get more on the Lautaro Martinez and Inter situation, far more than you have been given elsewhere.
