Tottenham Talk on Thursday 26th Aug

Dennis-Man

Good morning Spurs folk and welcome to matchday once again with Tottenham Talk on Thursday 26th Aug.

The Premier League are talking to the UK Government in an effort to get exemptions for football players who have to travel to Red Countries on the UK Covid List, to play international football.

Currently they will have to isolate for 10 days upon their return and this will affect four Tottenham players for the upcoming international break.

  • Cristian Romero and Giovanni Lo Celso when they travel to Argentina
  • Dávinson Sánchez when he travels to Colombia
  • Serge Aurier when he travels to Mozambique with the Ivory Coast.

The international window is from August 30th to September 8th so these four players won't be available until the 19th September, depending upon when they arrive back.

This means none of these four (Romero, Sánchez, Lo Celso, Aurier) will be available to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in the lunchtime kick-off Premier League fixture on the 11th September.

That could cause a centre-back issue with Cameron Carter-Vickers and Joe Rodon currently out injured.

Our opponents, Crystal Palace (The Eagles) would lose Jordan Ayew (Ghana away to South Africa) and Wilfried Zaha (Ivory Coast away to Mozambique).

This will affect 61 players after this international break.

  • Everton (7) - Allan, Richarlison, Yerry Mina, James Rodriguez, Jean-Phillipe Gbamin, Alex Iwobi, Cenk Tosun
  • Brighton & Hove Albion (6) - Alex MacAllister, Steven Alzate, Moises Caicedo, Yves Bissouma, Percy Tau, Enock Mwepu

They have written to the South African Football Federation to ensure them that clubs must release their players.

It is compulsory to release players for international duty.

Harry Kane

The word is that Harry Kane is going to sign a new contract at Tottenham which presumably means he will add another year and still have three years left.

The is no way Daniel Levy would put in a low release clause. If one was added I'd expect it to be £100m plus.

Now I did tell you that his signing a new contract could be linked to the Naming Rights deal, that I said would not be signed until after the transfer window had closed.

I hear a whisper that it was dependent upon him staying, at least the figure was, as Kane is a worldwide figure and therefore a commercial entity.

As reported in a previous article, if Kane stays then we will look for another stop gap striker.

The Athletic which is on a level with the Sun and their journalists have come up with a story that suggests Manchester City believe it is Tottenham's responsi9bility to make the Harry Kane sale happen and not theirs.

In other words the Athletic reporter believes Man City have told him, that Tottenham must lower the fee being demanded to a level that Manchester City find acceptable!

I think we can safely say the journalist has made this story up.

NOTE: We since this article was written Kane has announced he is staying at Tottenham this summer.

Dennis Man

We had Carlos Vinícius last season and I have brought you a constant stream of potential names to fill this position, well here is another one, Dennis Man.

Man is a 23-year-old (today) Romanian international (8 caps, 1 goal) right-winger, who can play as a second striker or a centre-forward and plays in Italy for Parma.

Wolves then had 5 more shots, Tottenham then 3 more shots (Harry Kane 81 mins, Steven Bergwijn 81 mins, Eric Dier 85 mins).

Wolves had the next 2 shots, then Pierre-Emile Højbjerg had a shot in the 88th minute before Wolves had their final shot in the 89thh minute.

Readers Question

Jonathan Weber (@jonathanweber82) has asked a question that needs a longer answer than Twitter will allow.

Clive, do you think we still try to bring in another striker on loan to buy as backup? Or will they just use Scarlett/Son?

Thanks for the question Jonathan, I'll have a stab at it with my thoughts.

We are clearly looking for another left-winger.

I'm not impressed with Ryan Sessegnon, is he more of an attacking full-back?

Son scores most of his goals from the left and we have Bergwijn and Gil so seem overstocked in that position. Puzzling why we are looking.

Perhaps Nuno sees Son as playing more centrally, even with Kane staying,in which case he would be our second striker.

Dane Scarlett is very highly rated and will need cameo appearances to develop.

We have been looking at experienced strikers and young strikers but some of that would have been as stop gaps if Kane left.

The two strikers we were seriously interested in Dušan Vlahović and Lautaro Martínez doubled in price during the window and became too expensive.

My view, taking all that into account, is that we will not sign a back-up striker, with other positions perhaps being more important at this stage, such as midfield.
