Tottenham Transfer Talk Thursday

Fabio-Paratici

Welcome to Tottenham Transfer Talk Thursday (yes I posted the wrong article on Friday) from Tottenham Hotspur Blog News (THBN), the trusted blog for the intelligent fan.

Fabio Paratici: “We’ve had talks with many managers. Antonio Conte is one of the managers we contacted, Gattuso and Fonseca too... then we decided to appoint Nuno Espirito Santo. He did an amazing job at Wolves.” [via @SkySport with @DiMarzio]

You'll not that say, we had talks, not we offered the job to as the press write.

And for those of you talking about drawing up contracts, the basic contract will be the same for any manager, terms and conditions etc, it's only the details that change, so no big deal.

The press again going for sensationalism and playing to the baying anti-Levy anti-ENIC crowd syndrome.

Further evidence that a lack of support for the club on Twitter has an affect on what is written about us and therefore what people think about us.

If you profess to support the club, then actually support it on social media.

Barcelona and Miralem Pjanić

I have mentioned several times here and on Twitter that Barcelona are in financial difficulty and we know Real Madrid had no money last summer either.

A presidential candidate, I revealed, had said they had outgoings of €580m and that that was more than their incoming revenue.

People complain when Spurs have to sell before we can buy, well here is one of the biggest clubs in the world in the same situation.

They want to sign Memphis Depay and doesn't that show how much of a talent the guy could become given his mental attitude of wanting to be the best, Sergio Agüero and Eric García.

They can't because they have exceeded the LaLiga salary limit also so need high earning fringe players off their books.

The problem is none of them want to leave, just the same as players at Spurs earning a decent wage not wanting to move as most would have to move to a smaller club.

Despite journalists telling you players like Erik Lamela and Harry Winks want to leave, they don't, they would rather stay, which makes selling them more difficult.

Danny Rose refused to move anywhere and just collected his £60,000-a-week salary for doing nothing.

Emmanuel Adebayor was another who refused to leave and turned down every offer, money was all he was interested in.

The Premier League restrict the level of wage increases a club can make to their wage budget each season, I suspect few are aware of that.

In the current climate, wages need to go down, but players don't want their wages reduced so we might see more run to the end of their contracts and then released, like Juventus did with a few high earners last summer.

Barcelona have to reduce their wage bill by €200m but, if they want to sign more high earners, they'll need to reduce it by more than that.

As I revealed in the Tottenham Talk Tuesday article, Miralem Pjanić earns £271,000-a-week including bonuses and he is just a fringe player.

They have already sold Konrad de la Fuente, Jean-Clair Todibo, and Junior Firpo but it isn't anywhere near enough.

Pjanić would rather stay or secondly return to Juventus. b

Juve are trying to reduce their wage bill and the latest news from Spain is that they have asked to take Pjanić on a two-year loan deal.

Tottenham want to take the 31-year-old (32 next April) Bosnian international on loan with an option to buy, but, the Spanish side would prefer him off the books totally.

A loan would mean us trying to get them to pay a portion of his wages, which I hear is Spurs paying 60%, Barca paying 40%.

That would be on his basic salary, not his salary with bonuses.

His basic salary, I believe, is £144,000-a-week so we would pay £86,400-a-week plus bonuses of around £127,000-a-week.

Ball park figure would be aiming for it to cost us £200,000-a-week, ideally over a 2-year loan period.

However, as they want him off the books that gives us the opportunity to ask them to let him go on a free transfer, even though he is under contract until 2024.

Having to pay a transfer fee and an even higher wage is not really an option, it becomes too expensive.

Pjanić will command a signing on fee but then every player does.

I would add, fans are going to be allowed in the stadium, but we must wait to see what affect that has on the spread of the Covid virus and whether fans returning is permanent or temporary.

I don't think Spurs will throw caution to the wind and hope the income is permanent yet.

Our attempts to sign Pjanić make me wonder if we are going to sign one name on £200,000-a-week and other players who have gone under the radar of our fans who don't watch foreign football each week.

Apparently, he has told his agent to sort his future out this week so if that is the case then we will not have to wait long, one way or the other.

Takehiro Tomiyasu

On to our dealings with Bologna for Takehiro Tomiyasu.

I am hearing that we have reached an agreement with the Italians over a fee and that Arsenal, whose name has been thrown into the mix, are not in the running.

Fabio Paratici convinced Tomiyasu that his future was with Spurs and not Atalanta and the player is now set on a move to Spurs so I'm expecting to see him in a Tottenham shirt this season.

Tying everything up shouldn't take too long now, although it would be helpful if we could finalise some moves out.

Danny Ings

Danny Ings has refused to sign a new contract at Southampton and Tottenham are taking a keen interest in the situation.

Spurs could be a very good option for Ings in the long run, only time will tell what happens in that department.

A proven Premier League goalscorer, I proposed we bought him when Liverpool were selling him, I thought he would make an idea backup striker who would get plenty of opportunities with 4 competitions to compete in.

Even with his injury history, I thought it was a gamble worth taking for the potential returns and so it has proved for Southampton, sadly not for us.

His contract expires next summer so Saints have either got to sell him or lose him for free next summer.

The power is with the player, he has the club over a barrel.

While we are on the subject on strikers, Pep Guardiola has said Manchester City can not afford to buy a striker at the prices being quoted, they simply don't have the money.

Further evidence for all those out of date fans who think an owner can simply give money to buy players, they can't, it is against FFP rules.

Also further proof that Harry Kane is not valued by us at £100m as the dishonest journalists and media keep trying to tell us.

Jannik Vestergaard

There is a lot of paper talk about Tottenham interest in another Southampton player, Jannik Vestergaard.

From what I hear that's all it is, paper talk.

We have other centre-back targets and we watch a huge batch of defenders, some of which I revealed last summer.

He is just one of many, but we have other preferred targets so I do not expect to see him in our colours this season.

Weston McKennie

New Tottenham Director of Football, Italian Fabio Paratici, is said to be keen to bring 22-year-old (23 in August) Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie to Spurs this summer according to reports in Italy.

The American international (24 caps, 7 goals, 4 assists) is a versatile player, capable of playing in a multitude of positions in midfield—mainly as a box-to-box or as a deep-lying defensive midfielder.

McKennie was on loan at Juventus last season from Bundesliga side Schalke 04 (loan fee £4.05m) and transferred on 1st July for £18.45m with a contract until 2025.

He has played 75 Bundesliga games and last season, 34 Serie A games, in total 46 games for Juve, including the UEFA Champions League fixtures apart from the opener when he had Covid.

Clearly McKennie is not a fringe player, but is unheralded and not a household name to Tottenham fans.

New Juventus Head Coach Max Allegri is yet to assess McKennie and will do so in pre-season.

It is suggested he sees Rodrigo Bentancur and Adrien Rabiot as the only two untouchable midfielders currently at the club.

Fabio Paratici

McKennie is the sort of unknown signing we are hoping Paratici can make for Tottenham, together with 'names' to build a winning squad, as he did in 11 years at Juventus.

It is no coincidence that they won 19 domestic trophies in his 11 years or that they started to win the title every season.

That wasn't the case before he arrived.

It is likely that we will see Paratici regularly in the media. In Italy he made himself available on match days and was the mouthpiece for the club to keep the fans informed.

If that continues over here then we can expect greater communication and, for some, greater understanding of the clubs activity and direction.

He made 10 free agent signing at Juventus

Since that graphic, Adrien Rabiot was signed on a free transfer in 2019.
