Cristian Romero Saga - Saturday update

Cristian-Romero

Hello folks, an extra today after I was asked a question by Dave Manlove about Cristian Romero so have done a quick appraisal of the situation as I see it.

Here goes.

The 8 Argentinians who played top flight League football for Tottenham Hotspur:

  • Osvaldo Ardiles (238)
  • Erik Lamela (174)
  • Ricardo Villa (133)
  • Mauricio Taricco (130)
  • Giovani Lo Celso (46)
  • Federico Fazio (28)
  • Paulo Gazzaniga (22)
  • Juan Foyth (16)

Will Cristian Romero be the ninth?

What has happened?

Good question.

Well here's my take.

Tottenham (Fabio Paratici) identified the 23-year-old (24 in February) as the mainstay of a new improved defence and opened negotiations.

Atalanta and Tottenham agreed a fee in principle and Tottenham and Romero, through his agent, agreed personal terms.

All that was needed was a Governing Body Endorsement (required now we are no longer a part of the EU) and a work permit issued by the Home Office.

Neither were expected to be a problem so it was back to Atalanta with the agreed bid, but put in writing to make it official.

In the meantime Barcelona have contacted Atalanta and put a spanner in the works.

They need to offload players from their wage bill (LaLiga requirement) to bring in players, so what have they offered Atalanta that is so appealing for them to begin stalling tactics?

Juventus want Miralem Pjanić from Barcelona, but need players off their wage bill before they can afford him.

They want to sell Romero to Atalanta for the contractually agreed fee and sell them Merih Demiral or sell him to someone else.

Juve can't move without doing so, Barca can't move without doing so.

The fee for Demiral and Romero will come to around €55m (£46.94m - US$65.27m - AUS$88.86m) hence Atalanta changing their asking requirements.

Have Atalanta failed to get the Demiral fee reduced or are they being forced to pay more than they want and passing on that amount to Tottenham?

Atalanta are only guaranteed the payment part, which will be paid in instalments, and not the bonus payments, which are only obtainable on the achievement of certain goals, such as Champions League qualification.

Thus Atalanta tried to up the price, which we have countered with an alternative payment structure that increases the instalment amount payment (guaranteed payment) and reduced the bonus element.

The latest haggling has been about this, that is how I see it.

Now, the spanner?

What have Barcelona told Atalanta?

That I don't know, but with a need to reduce outgoing they are not going to be in a position to sign Cristian Romero until the end of the window.

Is this an alternative reason for Atalanta to stall.

Have they offered Atalanta loan players or players on good terms?

Have they offered them exciting youth talent?

Is there something untoward?

That seems to me to be the two options.

It is either getting the money to not be out of pocket to bring in a replacement or they have done a deal with Barcelona, if they can free funds.
