Wednesday Transfer Talk, Manager Deal Done

Wednesday Transfer Talk, Manager Deal Done

Paulo-Fonseca

Before we get into Wednesday Transfer Talk and news of a manager deal done, a health update.

Ok, well I'm taking it easy after my heart failure, plodding around and not exerting myself. Felt OK this first week out of hospital generally, tired of an evening so in bed any time from 9:30pm.

Spent time pottering about in the garden, plenty of weeding to do but pruning is a bit easier so the weeding can wait for the time being.

Seen movement so the frogs are still around, good news.

End of health update so without further delay, new manager talk, some Transfer Talk and the financial difficulty Inter Milan are in.

New Manager Search

Is the new manager search over?

According to Calciomercato reporter Nicolo' Schira, Spurs have reached an agreement with former Roma coach Paulo Fonseca.

He suggests it will be a 3-year contract for the 48-year-old Portuguese manager, worth €4m (£3.45m - US$4.87m - AUS$6.29m) a year.

Fonseca has managed clubs in Portugal, Ukraine and Italy including Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk.

His preferred formation is 3-4-2-1 and trophies include the Portuguese Cup, 1 Portuguese Super Cup, 3 Ukraine League titles, 3 Ukrainian Cups, 1 Ukrainian Super Cup.

The Italian side numbered Edin Dzeko in their ranks last season, a tall target man striker, exactly what we are looking at in Wout Weghorst (reported below).

Born in Mozambique (then a Portuguese colony) in 1973, as a player Fonseca was an uncompromising central defender who made over 100 appearances in Portugal’s top division.

As manager of Portuguese third division side Desportivo Aves he gained promotion and took them to the quarter-finals of the Portuguese Cup twice.

Top flight side Pacos de Ferreira snapped him up and he led them to a third-place finish and a Champions League play-off spot.

At Braga he led them to fourth, the Europa League quarter-finals and a Portuguese Cup win against powerhouses Porto.

Shakhtar Donetsk, who had knocked Braga out of Europe took him on and he led them to three doubles without being able to play home games in their own ground before moving onto Roma.

What will be music to Tottenham fans is that attacking players thrive within his playing style, so Tottenham should once again be exciting to watch.

His coaching seems to have generally brought out the best in players which is rather encouraging.

Maurizio Sarri, who was said to waiting to see if Spurs would return to him after talking to Antonio Conte reportedly signed for Lazio late yesterday afternoon, perhaps indicating we had found our man.

Wednesday Transfer Talk

Juventus are interested in Manchester City's Gabriel Jesus with reports in Italy suggesting a figure of €70m (£60.27m - US$85.31m - AUS$110.05m) would be required.

As reported by AS, Atletico Madrid are targeting Arkadiusz Milik this summer whom they have followed since his Napoli days.

The Olympique Marseille striker has long been followed by the Spanish club who is also followed by PSG and Spurs.

Back from his half-season loan spell at Getafe, 23-year old (24 next January) former Spanish Under-21 international central midfielder Carles Aleñá is likely to be sold this summer with his Barcelona contract ending in 2022.

Valencia, Wolves, AC Milan and Tottenham have all been following his progress and Spurs made enquiries about signing him in January 2020.

Being left-footed, Aleñá can play as a deep-lying playmaker, a central midfielder or as an inverted right winger.

Barça want at least €8m (£6.88m - US$9.74m - AUS$12.58m) for his signature.

According to information from José Félix Díaz in the Spanish newspaper Marca, Real Madrid are willing to part with left-back Marcelo, midfielder Isco, and winger Gareth Bale this summer.

The Spaniards are looking to save 50m (£43.06m - US$60.91m - AUS$78.62m) on wages and raise some transfer funds.

All three players have just a year left on their contracts and Carlo Ancelotti has given the green light to their sale.

Tottenham are reportedly interested in signing AC Milan centre-back Alessio Romangoli who has one year remaining on his contract.

The 26-year-old (27 next January) is captain of both his club and country after joining from Roma in 2015.

According to Brazilian site Globoesporte, José Mourinho has asked Roma to sign Carlos Vinícius

Does that indicate that Tottenham do not want to keep him, Mourinho would know?

The suggestion is another loan deal with an option to buy which would leave Spurs searching for a new back-up striker again.

Tottenham have been following the progress of 22-year-old (23 in July) Getafe left-sided midfielder Marc Cucurella.

The Spanish international (1 cap as a left-back vs Lithuania coming off at half-time) was captain of the Under-21 team and registered 11 caps with them.

He came through the Barcelona academy, went on loan to Getafe in 2019 then transferred permanently last summer.

The suggestion is Getafe are looking for €30m (£25.91m - US$36.58m - AUS$47.30m) for Cucurella, who is under contract until 2024 and can play anywhere down the left.

Croatian international Ivan Perišić is reportedly leaving Inter Milan (at last) after being linked with clubs every transfer window for the last 4 years or so.

The 32-year-old (33 next February) left winger only has a year left on his contract and has been followed by RB Leipzig, Hertha Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt.

He gets linked with Spurs every window and the upcoming window is no different, he has already been linked with Paratici as a possible signing for Spurs.

Leading the chase for him are Eintracht Frankfurt.

Both Tottenham and Newcastle United are taking an interest in giant Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst.

The 6ft 6in (1.97m) Dutch international striker (6 caps) was a player we looked strongly at before signing Carlos Vinicius on loan with an option to buy.

We have made enquiries ahead of the summer window despite some fans on Twitter thinking the club aren't doing anything, which is rather naive.

A target man with good hold up play, he is a fine finisher in and around the box.

For Wolfsburg in 2018/19 he scored 18 goals in 36 games, in 2019/20 he scored 20 goals in 43 games, in 2020/21 he scored 25 goals in 41 games.

Last season he started 97% of Bundesliga games, played96% of minutes and recorded a 49% goal participation figure.

He played 2,950 Bundesliga minutes, equivalent to 32.78 full games, scoring 20 goals, one every 148 minutes and also had 9 assists.

Tottenham have been in and are in talks to sign 23-year-old (24 in August) left winger Marcus Thuram from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

According to RMC journalist Mohamad Bouhafsi, negotiations have accelerated in the last few days for the French international (3 caps).

His contract runs until 2023, he appeared in the starting XI for Bundesliga games 59% of the time, played 57% of the minutes and recorded a goal participation percentage of 29%.

Former Tottenham and England striker Jermain Defoe OBE, has signed a new one-year deal with Rangers and has moved into a player/coach role.

The 38-year-old (39 in October) has made 72 appearances for Rangers and scored 32 goals after joining the club in January 2019.

Inter Milan in financial trouble

Inter Milan are €400m (£344.03m - US$486.97m - AUS$629.18m) in debt and in financial trouble with the owners, the Suning Group, whose chairman has got himself heavily into debt.

He financed Inter through the Luxembourg shareholder vehicle that belongs to the Zhang family. He did so by pledging shares of Inter.

Inter have €375m (£322.56m - US$456.49m - AUS$589.91m) in bonds maturing in 2022, which will have to be repaid or refinanced.

Italian football financial expert Carlo Festa says they are burning money with no income and that ownership will probably change within a year, perhaps defaulting to Oaktree Capital, who have underwritten €100m (£86.02m - US$121.73m - AUS$157.31m) of bonds, if they can't be repaid.

Inter are currently trying to reduce costs and increase revenue while Antonio Conte wanted more investment into the squad. Without further income that simply wasn't possible.

The wage bill is too high and they want to reduce this but don't want to weaken the team either so they have a dilemma.

Most of their income comes from Chinese sponsorship but the Chinese are basically pulling out of football so when the deals conclude they are unlikely to be extended.

It is these sponsorship deal and debt that has financed their title win but the club now has financial problems to solve.

They have won an Italian title but have put the club at risk to achieve it.
