Tottenham Transfer News

Merih-Demiral

As reported before, Tottenham are interested in 23-year-old (24 next March) Turkish international centre-back (24 caps) Merih Demiral.

I reported last summer that he was one of a host of centre-backs we were watching but got told by the Twitterati that Juventus would never sell him, well 12 months on and they are hawking him around Europe.

The fan in the street still doesn't understand how Covid has hit the football industry financially.

Few grasp the financial implications, many it seems see no difference between this transfer window and pre-pandemic summer windows, they expect the spending to be the same.

Address them on the point and they'll give you a different story but their tweets tell you they still think money is confetti that grows on trees, but then they still incorrectly think owners can buy players, no wonder they don't know what they are talking about.

The Juventus defender hasn't had the greatest of European Championships with Turkey finishing bottom of their group without taking a single point.

Obviously Paratici knows him well and the players agent has spoken with Spurs this week.

Juventus are asking for €40m (£34.15m - US$47.75m - AUS$62.99m) but it's thought they would settle for €35m (£29.88m - US$41.76m - AUS$55.11m).

Although, to throw a spanner in the works, I have seen a Turkish report suggesting Juventus are asking for €30m (£25.61m - US$35.78m - AUS$47.24m) which I think is lazy journalism again and is £30m with the currency sign changed instead of converted.

I spoke the other day about all the regurgitation Twitter accounts, websites etc and Chinese Whispers changing a story in their fight for clicks to appease advertisers.

Ben Davies

I gave the example of Ben Davies, who an article quoted Transfermarkt as a £15m player, that Chinese Whispers turned into a Tottenham asking price.

The 28-year-old (29 next April) signed a new contract on July 8 2019 and has a contract until 2024 so no way was £15m ever going to be an accurate figure.

Why can't journalists use a bit of common sense?

According to Italian reports, Paratici says Spurs do not want to sell Davies, he is a solid dependable option to have in the squad so it would take a figure around €30m (£25.61m - US$35.78m - AUS$47.24m) to prise him away.

Marcel Sabitzer

AS Roma, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Leicester City, and Atletico Madrid have all been interested in RB Leipzig captain Marcel Sabitzer.

That list now also includes AC Milan who hold a strong interest in the 27-year-old (28 next March) Austrian international (53 caps, 8 goals, 8 assists) central midfielder.

The Bundesliga side have set a fee of €45m (£38.61m - US$53.70m - AUS$70.85m) on their asset.

Bartłomiej Drągowski

New Tottenham Director of Football Fabio Paratici has 23-year-old (24 in August) Polish international (1 cap) goalkeeper Bartłomiej Drągowski on his list of shot stoppers to follow.

Wolves, West Ham, Everton, Atalanta, AC Milan, and Lazio all have him in their sight too.

Currently with Italian Serie A side Fiorentina, he is unsure whether he will be staying or leaving this summer.

His market value is believed to be around €16m (£13.73m - US$19.09m - AUS$25.20m).

New Manager

Again stories being put out that simply aren't true, Potter for one. Paratici decided against Fonseca and is now looking at Nuno Espirito Santo, who for some reason is getting bad press from our fans.

I think this is all about agents because Gattuso has the same agent, Jorge Mendes, a Portuguese agent with a bad name in agent circles.

He is all about moving his players about for signing on fees and agents commission.

I won't be delighted if we are getting into bed with him but it does mean we will get easier access to his players if our manager is his client.

He seems to be a means to an end but he isn't as bad as coach as some of our ill-informed fans are saying.

It would seem he sees Spurs as a good association as he has been wanting an 'in' at the club for a few seasons now.

He will have spoken to the club and discussed what he can do for us.

One name being bandied about now is Steven Gerrard, currently manager at Rangers in Scotland.

He has made an encouraging start to his managerial career but Spurs would be a big step up and as Frank Lampard found out, you need experience to be challenging at the top of the league.

It might just be a little early for Gerrard, unless he is an above average coach and that we don't know.
