Spurs have money to spend this summer

Cristophe-Galtier

The Big 6 (Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal) have spent £26 billion on transfers and wages since the Premier League began in 1992.

The total figure spent by clubs in the Premier League since the same time is £52 billion.

That's 50% of the overall spend.

Leicester City rank 12th in the spending charts, yet have won the Premier League and FA Cup.

That shows smart recruitment and hiring quality managers can bring success.

I have regularly written that not all managers are equal as coaches.

Some have to buy, they can't develop, while others have less tactical ability or organisational ability, effectively less coaching ability.

Daniel Levy has sought managers with greater coaching ability I believe to get Spurs achieving better than our spending would achieve, simply because we have less money to spend than our rivals.

Few have had the ability, apart from Mauricio Pochettino.

He showed what I stressed we needed and what we are searching for again I believe, hence turning back to him and trying to re-sign him.

Chelsea have spent £5.3 billion in 29 years.
Manchester United have spent £5.29 billion in 29 years.
Manchester City have spent £4.4 billion in 29 years.
Liverpool have spent £4.4 billion in 29 years.
Arsenal have spent £4 billion in 29 years.
Tottenham have spent £2.9 billion in 29 years.

For the majority of this time Spurs income from the Europa League while the others had greater commercial income and income from the Champions League.

These figures demonstrate the financial difficulty we have had and thus why the club needed to develop to generate more money for itself and compete on a more even footing.

The new stadium and Champions League football have helped but the stadium isn't earning at the moment.

Leicester have achieved their success through the better implementation of data analytics and thus buying players cheaper who can perform above their expected level.

University of Liverpool football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes Tottenham have money to spend this summer, more than most are expecting.

Spurs raised £250 million through the sale of US private placements to institutional investors and told This is Football:

"They've certainly got cash in the bank which will allow them to pay the day-to-day costs.

"I suspect that they've tried to ring-fence the transfer budget and this issue of PPs will allow them to do so.

"So yeah, they should be in a strong position to go into the transfer market this summer."

If we didn't have a decent transfer budget would Antonio Conte even have bothered to talk to us, given he left Inter Milan because they weren't prepared to invest further in the squad and aim for winning the UEFA Champions League.

I have stuck my neck out on Twitter and suggested we might appoint Lille head coach Cristophe Galtier, whose contract expires on 30 June 2022.

He has won one Ligue 1 title and the French League Cup, no mean feat when you don't manage PSG.

From April 7th 2005 until November 24th 2005 he was the Assistant Manager at Portsmouth, who were a Premier League club at the time.

As a player, the 54 year old spent most of his career in France with a season in Italy.

Currently Nice are trying to agree a compensation figure with Lille to sign him as their new manager.

Galtier himself has written to Lille President Olivier Létang to inform him that he would like to move on.

Of course another name I threw into the hat on Twitter that nobody else was mentioning was Jurgen Klinsmann, whom it has been confirmed Daniel Levy spoke to not long after Jose Mourinho was sacked.

Our net has been cast wide right from the beginning.
