The Compound Effect and Spurs

I'm back with a brilliant new post to set you thinking again as the continuation of the season draws nearer, thank goodness..

I tend not to watch the international stuff and a break from writing has been refreshing.

So what are we going to discuss today?

Choices, decisions, compound effect, Spurs and fans.

If I were to give you a choice of one penny that doubles every day for 31 days or a £1m in cash, how many of you would take the £1m?

Your life is controlled by one factor.

Whether you end your life in a mansion or renting in the roughest area, you are there for one reason and one reason alone, the choices you made.

Your whole life is nothing but the accumulated compound effect of the choices you've made up to that moment.

If I were to give you a choice of one penny that doubles every day for 31 days or a £1m in cash, how many of you would take the £1m?

How about if I upped it to £3m, how many of you would take the £3m?

Small things add up to big results.

One penny doubled for 5 days = 16p.

Day 1 = 1p, Day 2 = 2p, Day 3 = 4p, Day 4 = 8p, Day 5 = 16p.

One penny doubled for 10 days = £5.12

One penny doubled for 31 days = I'll tell you at the end.

31 days of simple choices can have dramatically effects.

Stop looking for quick fixes.

Happiness and wealth are the result of simple choices.

Success is the result of simple choices.

There are no quick fixes.

You earn where you get to by the choices you make.

Success is earned one day at a time.

You either work towards success or you travel away from it.

You are either going in the direction of success or you're going in the direction of failure.

One decision at a time.

The consequences of the choices you make are invisible.

But they have a butterfly effect, one little itty-bitty choice, ten, fifteen, twenty years later and there's a tsunami in your life, which is either positive or negative.

You need patience even though you don't see the results immediately.

Mourinho building Spurs in like that.

Spurs fans need patience, Mourinho has only been year less than a year.

Many fans could not see foundations being laid, could not see that change takes time, building takes time.

Many can not see that you have to build the infrastructure to support and grow the team, otherwise you are stuck with mid-table finances trying to punch above your weight all the time.

That is a recipe for disaster.

Getting overstretched and having to sell would be inevitable, it would just be a matter of time before it all came crumbling down and without the income, building again would be a real struggle.

Fans may not like it,but the infrastructure has had to come before the team in order to generate the income levels that enable the team to come before the infrastructure.

A section called for Mourinho's head but changes had to be made even though results wouldn't be seen until the next season.

The Kaisen effect, bit by bit you put the pieces together, bit by bit you change mentalities, bit by bit players get a better grasp of the system, bit by bit you add players.

Bit by bit you improve, the Kaisen effect.

It takes time, players had to learn how to play a new system, the compound effect needed time to show itself.

New players were needed who had the right mentality.

That couldn't happen until the summer and we have all seen the results of that summer.

The optimism has returned to Spurs, the hope has returned, the feel good factor.

It is the fans responsibility to embrace and transmit that on social media, outdated agends need to be put to bed.

Again, after the first league game some had already written Pierre-Emile Højbjerg off, complaining he is average.

Just a few games later he looks like a superb addition who will make a difference.

The compound effect of our training of a new system has been ignited and every choice we make ignites it and fuels it, like the signing of Gareth Bale, one of the worlds best.

Those choices included how we approached the summer transfer market and the players we bought.

Again, fans moaned and moaned things were not happening fast enough.

They were constantly trying to derail and distract the reality of the market.

There's no magic pill.

Changing the mentality and outcome is mundane.

The process is frustrating.

It is only action that produces results, methodical action, detailed action..

44% of doctors who tell you you need to improve your diet and exercise are overweight themselves.

The point is, there is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.

Doctors know it, but they don't all walk it.

One penny doubled for 5 days = 16p
One penny doubled for 10 days = £5.12
One penny doubled for 15 days = £163.84
One penny doubled for 20 days = £5,242.88
One penny doubled for 25 days = £167,772.16 - (£0.16m)
One penny doubled for 30 days = £5,386,709.12 - (£5.3m)
One penny doubled for 31 days = £10,737,418.24 - (£10.7m)

Plan success and walk the path.

That's what Spurs are doing, that's what you can do.
