Monday Tottenham Tittle Tattle - Godin vs Thiago

Godin-vs-Thiago

Good morning folks, I took a day off yesterday, well that's not strictly true, I still penned an article for future release.

I'm back today though and having filled the bird feeders at 5:30 am and enjoyed the starlings, sparrows, jackdaws and more visit over my morning cup of tea, I turn to the news to see what is being suggested about our beloved Spurs this morning.

What do I find immediately, a player earning more than Tottenham's highest earner being linked with a move to Spurs and the suggestion that Mourinho is trying to 'win the race' for the signature of Brazilian centre-back Thiago Silva.

There is no denying his ability, but currently he earns £274,310-a-week (€305,000 - AUS$503,281 - US$343,369) , that's more than Harry Kane. (Source: SillySeason.com)

At a time when money is not abundant, do you think Spurs would splash that money on a 35-year-old (36 in September)?

What are you going to get out of him, one season, two seasons?

The names of Arsenal (who have no money) and Everton are thrown at the story which just sounds like lazy journalism to me.

It sounds as though a journalist has decided who might need a centre-back and just written their names down as a result.

Sorry but I don't seriously believe this is even a starter.

Will we have spoken to his agent to find out his wage requirements and signing on fee?

Yes I'm sure we have, but are we going to bring in a player at the top of our salary scale?

I doubt it myself.

There is nothing in the reports, no quotes for instance, that give it any substance, just a Sun reporters imagination.

I'd want something a bit more concrete than that before I could develop an interest in this story.

Take another option, Diego Godin.

He has spent one year at Inter Milan after many seasons (joined for the 2010/11 season) at Spanish defensive specialists Atlético de Madrid.

The 34-year-old (35 in February) is a year younger than Thiago, is very experienced internationally having played 135 games for Uruguay as opposed to the 89 caps Thiago has represented Brazil.

Inter picked Godin up for free and his contract runs until 2022 so he isn't going to be expensive at his age and the Italians will want to get their highest earner (according to Gazzetta dello Sport) off the books.

They suggest Godin is earning £6.08m (€6.75m - AUS$11.15m - US$7.59m) a year which equates to a weekly wage of £116,866 (€129,808 - AUS$214,780 - US$145,891).

Thiago Silva remember is reportedly on £274,310-a-week (€305,000 - AUS$503,281 - US$343,369).

There is a huge difference in wages, but is there that huge difference in quality?

Both could teach Japhet Tanganga, Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez a thing or to as well as those coming through the development squad.

If you were Daniel Levy or José Mourinho, which one of the two would you be choosing?
