Tottenham Transfer Talk: Piątek Update

Totteham Transfer Talk with THBN takes a further look at the Krzysztof Piątek situation.

OK, several rumours abound

  • Zlatan Ibrahimović has arrived and AC Milan want to keep Piątek as back up
  • Zlatan Ibrahimović has arrived and Piątek wants to leave with fears over game time
  • AC Milan do not want to loan Piątek, only sell him
  • AC Milan have turned down an initial loan deal of £4.25 million (€5m - AUS$8.10m - US$5.55m) and a purchase price of £25.49 million (€30m - AUS$48.59m - US$33.31m) in the summer
  • AC Milan have turned down a deal using Juan Foyth or Victor Wanyama as part payment
  • Tottenham have turned down a deal using Juan Foyth or Victor Wanyama as part payment
  • Tottenham do not want to pay £25.49 million (€30m - AUS$48.59m - US$33.31m)
  • AC Milan want a fee of £27.23 million (€32m - AUS$51.55m - US$35.56m
  • Negotiations have started between AC Milan and Spurs
  • AC Milan and Spurs have agreed a £28 million (€33.94m - AUS$53.38m - US$36.58m) fee and a medical takes place within 48 hours

Now we have a choice of rumours for you and my personal favourite is that negotiations have started and we are discussing a fee.

Are AC Milan looking to seel and if so why when 28-year-old (39 in October) Zlatan Ibrahimović only has limited shelf time left?

The answer to that lies in another attacking player called Matteo Politano.

He is a 26-year-old (27 in August) Italian international (3 caps, 1 goal) who is currently not playing for Inter Milan despite the club having injury problems.

Inter are prepared to sell Politano to Milan and the player is happy to undertake the move too. negotiations are underway.

Politano is a right-sided attacker who can play on the left or central and AC Milan believe they can secure him for £17.02 million (€20m - AUS$32.21m- US$22.23m), a little more than Inter paid Sassuolo for him last July.

If you add in the previous season's loan fee £4.25 million (€5m - AUS$8.10m - US$5.55m) they might have to pay a little more.

Conte has played him for just 305 minutes all season, equivalent to less than 3 and a half games.

AC Milan believe selling Piątek will finance the deal, hence not wanting a loan deal with books to balance by the end of the official season.

Transfers are not paid in one lump sum, they are paid in several instalments or in instalments over the course of a contract.

AC Milan have to negotiate with Inter Milan how they are going to structure payments for Politano and negotiate with Tottenham a similar structure that will cover the cost of the other deal.

A transfer fee negotiation is not as simple therefore as the masses believe, it's all about the structure of a payment and how that fits in with accounting for Financial Fair Play. It is not like going into a newsagent and buying a paper or your weekly shopping.

Equally, until AC Milan agree on a deal for Politano, they are not going to release Piątek and leave themselves short of cover. If you sell before you buy you can find yourself in a hole you may not be able to get out of.

Dans will call for Daniel Levy to rush things through and throw money at the situation but that just demonstrates a lack of understanding of the realities of transfers.

All that is before we get to the complicated business of image rights, sponsorship deals with existing clients and obligations to new sponsors.

In Italy, there is little doubt that Krzysztof Piątek is leaving and his agent was contacted by the Calcio Today editorial staff:
“These are important days I can't say anything. Respect my silence”.
Jose Mourinho was obviously asked about the potential arrival of Piątek:
"If the chairman would bring us a solution that can help us in these difficult months, it would be welcome . An attacker serves. Otherwise we would wait for summer. Now I think of the players I have, among these we currently do not have a striker. Surely a new player makes every manager happy . There is no wish list".
I have heard that Piątek is happy to come to Spurs if the clubs can agree on a fee or the structure of a fee.

Italian news outlet Corriere della Sera suggests the whole squad at Milan is up for sale by Elliott Management who owns 99.9% of the club.

The report goes on to say that the club are willing to sell, even at a loss, players who are not performing to their salary expectations.

The group plan to appoint Max Allegri with full control to get Milan back into the Champions League and to balance the budget in two years.

Suso has been on Spurs radar for a few years but he is close to a move to Roma with Politano again suggested as his successor.
