Gerson

Tottenham Hotspur have held talks over a move for 22-year-old (23 next May) Flamengo midfielder Gerson.

Gerson Santos da Silva, simply known as Gerson, is a left-footed Brazilian Under-20 International (10 caps) central midfielder. He is under contract until 2023 having returned to Brazil from Roma in July this year.

While with Roma, he spent last season out on loan to fellow Serie A side Fiorentina.

His father rules out a return to Europe so soon though.

“No money brings the happiness I am seeing in my son. He is happy playing on the team he loves, ”said Gerson's father in an interview with Rádio Tupi, Marcão. He added:

“My granddaughter is happy, my son is happy, I am happy. So forget it (the chance to leave). I have 4 and a half years of contract, only fulfilled 5 months."

According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola he was telling Barcelona to forget signing him.

Thiago Rabelo is a journalist based in Rio de Janeiro with Globo. He feels that Gerson has developed and is now the one who pulls the strings for Flamengo.

He became the most expensive Brazilian player signed by a Brazilian club ever when Flamengo paid a reported €11.8 million (£10.05m - AUS$18.95m - US$13.07m) transfer fee to bring him back to Brazil from Roma on 12 July 2019.

"For the dynamic of the team, Gerson is the most important player. It's like with the great Barcelona team of Ronaldinho and Deco: Ronaldinho was majestic, but when Deco was playing well, the team played well.

"Gerson performs a similar function for Flamengo now. He's great at organising the play. At the moment, he's the best Brazilian player playing in the national league.

"He was bought by Roma in 2016, but he was a bit lazy. The Portuguese coach for Flamengo, Jorge Jesus, changed his mentality.

"Now Gerson participates in more of the game. That's the key now. When he was at Roma—or Fluminense before that—if he had the ball, he was fine. He played. But when he didn't have the ball, he didn't engage."
