Confrontation at Spurs


I was firmly in the Mauricio Pochettino ranks but player power has won the day again, even though some of those players are not due to be here next year.

There was a telling moment in a press conference recently where Pochettino said:
"He and his coaching staff kept training sessions and their work with the players fresh, designing new ways to work with them each season and that if a player can't motivate themselves to play football then they're the one with the issue."

That is something that is both true and false. Yes, a player has to motivate themselves. but it is also the job of the manager to find out what motivates a player and tap into that.

Jose Mourinho is a confrontation manager, he picks a fight with a player or two, either to get them out of the club or to motivate them, Luke Shaw in his last job at Manchester United being a prime example.

Daniel Levy wanted Mourinho before Mauricio Pochettino arrived but we couldn't get him, we couldn't get Louis van Gaal either, managers were waiting for bigger clubs, now it seems, managers see us as a bigger club and an opportunity.

I am going to be very interested in what Mourinho has to say.

I did say in a comment recently that the issues at Spurs with some of their players is down to the manager to work out the best strategy to get the best out of them but unfortunately Poch stopped doing that with some of the players and himself, he had become withdrawn and sulky in public and that attitude from the manager seeps into the players, He must learn that motivating players is just as important as de motivating the same players.
    Yes the players have once again proven that they think they are bigger than the club but the manager must take the responsibility to ensure that does not happen and Poch failed to do that since the Champs League final because he was thinking the same way.
    I love Poch who has been our best manager since Bill Nicholson and he will be a top top manager with a bigger club but I just feel he let himself down over the last six months here at Tottenham

  2. Poch not flying back to London with the team after the CL final now seems much more telling. I was kind of shocked when I heard that. It's a terrible message to your players and the club. If you ask your players to give everything they have and work so hard, then disappear after suffering your most crushing loss, then those same players will lose some respect for you and feel like they don't owe you that same effort anymore. You go back with your team, it's part of your job. You don't immediately take of on holiday, no matter how devastated you are.
