Winks far better than Rice

Winks far better than Rice

My brief thoughts on the international break were than Declan Rice once again showed his limitations and that he stops England playing from the back.

His positioning and his trotting backwards and forwards sideways across the pitch give the centre-backs no passing options.

He and Henderson were not passing outlets, that left Kane, but he is the centre-forwards so unlikely to receive a pass straight from the back with the whole of the opposition to pass through and just three players in midfield to find, but all marked by more opposition players.

Put Harry Winks in there and England were a different kettle of fish, we suddenly had passing options, he created space for others. He continually picked the ball off the centre-backs and distributed it.

I said the same thing when Fabian Delph played with Rice in an earlier game, they both just ran sideways and stopped England. They were a hindrance to us, just as Rice and Henderson were a hindrance against a very ordinary Czech Republic side.

He has a lot to learn yet that Rice fellow.
