Spurs Serious About Signing Brazilian

Spurs Serious About Signing Brazilian

Spurs-watching-Gabigol

Tottenham Hotspur chief scout Steve Hitchen attended the Copa Libertadores Semi-Final on October 3rd in the Arena do Grêmio.

The game between Grêmio, a Brazilian professional football club based in Porto Alegre and Flamengo, another Brazilian club this time based in Rio de Janeiro finished 1-1 with the second leg taking place on the 24th of the month.

Who was he there for? That can only be guesswork but Spurs have been linked with Gabriel Barbosa Almeida, commonly known as Gabriel Barbosa or simply as Gabigol, who is on loan at Flamengo from Inter Milan.

The striker is thought to be in talks with Schalke over a move according to reports in Italy, although his agent denies any knowledge of such talks. Other Italian reports suggest Flamengo are making a new bid to secure the services of the 23-year-old (24 next August) permanently.

Spurs-watching-Luan

Luan Guilherme de Jesus Vieira, commonly known as Luan is another player Tottenham have been linked to before. The 26-year-old (27 next March) Brazilian is a striker for Grêmio but would appear to be too old to consider.

His age counts against him having to adapt to a new country, new culture and new league, plus the fact he doesn't have that many years service to give before you would be looking to move him on. I would suggest that he is no longer a target and we have eyes elsewhere.

Spurs-watching-Matheus-Henrique

Matheus Henrique De Souza is a 21-year-old (22 in December) Brazilian international central midfielder who plays for Grêmio.

It is a position where we are looking to move on Victor Wanyama and would be open to offers for Eric Dier as well. With Oliver Skipp coming through there could still be a vacancy there.

Henrique has one full international cap gained against Senegal in a friendly recently (10th Oct) where he played for 22 minutes in a 1-1 draw and sat on the bench for another friendly against Nigeria three days later that also ended in a 1-1 draw.

He is a central midfield player but can play defensive midfield so more the Dembélé role than the Winks role.

Spurs-watching-Rodrigo-Caio

Another possible player being observed is right-footed Flamengo central defender, although he can also play as a defensive midfielder, Rodrigo Caio.

The 26-year-old (27 next August) has been on our radar before so we have undoubtedly been watching his progress with interest. My concern would be his age again. He would also have to adapt to a new country, new culture, new language, new food, new system, new league etc.

The perils of that always have to be weighed up against the number of years he could potentially give us before he would need to be moved sold or replaced. Being 27 at the start of next season is not ideal for that, 24, 25, maybe 26 at the latest.

There are always other targets, younger targets.

Caio has 4 full international caps for Brazil having made his debut on 30 May 2016 against Panama. It may surprise you to know that he has been in 15 squads, including the most recent internationals.

He has been on the bench 11 times, substituted on twice, once for 1 minute and once for 11 minutes on his debut, He has started 2 games in friendlies against Colombia and Australia in 2017.

Anyway, having watched the first-leg, it would come as no surprise if Hitchen were to watch the second leg too.

What it does mean, if Hitchen is watching, is that we are serious about someone from one of those sides.
