The Success Series - Desire

THE SUCCESS SERIES

Chapter 2 - Desire

The-Success-Series

Hello and welcome to the second installment of THE SUCCESS SERIES, inspired by the best book ever written of it's kind, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.

In this series, I take a look at the success formula and how it might apply to Tottenham Hotspur.

There are a few things to bear in mind.

The overriding goal of the journey is to rival Real Madrid and Barcelona on the field as well as off it so everything is measured against and as part of that objective.

Winning a trophy, winning a title are merely steps in that journey, notable that they are along the way.

Equally, remember that off the field comes before on the field. Many of you won't like that but the business pays for the football, the football doesn't pay for the business.

Yes, a successful club brings in more money, but you still need the finances in the first place to take your club to the top level. You build the foundations before you build the house or it falls down.

The game is littered with clubs who have gambled with their future by overspending in the pursuit of success or simply staying in the Premier League, it isn't just Leeds United, they were just the most high profile.

In the first part, we looked at the story of the uncle of U.R. Darby and the story of being 3 feet from gold.

Today we move onto Desire.

This is a massive one, massive.

Desire is at the heart of achievement.

Desire is not the same as a wish or a hope. Desire is definite and insatiable.

To achieve you must have a burning desire for your goal, an aching desire, an obsession. Mst don't find it and can't be bothered anyway. Those people do not have a winning mentality, merely a mentality to try and win, the two are miles apart.

You must be able to see your goal in your mind's eye, until then you won't be able to manifest it. If it is a trophy, you see yourself lifting it, if it is a lifestyle, you see yourself living it.

You must feel the emotions associated it, live it in your mind's eye.

You need to recall it every day, then you'll have a chance of achieving it.

Gus Poyet on the ITV4 pre-season coverage over here in the UK talked about desire after watching another shambolic Real Madrid performance.

He said that if a player doesn't have the desire to defend he won't be able to defend, whether he has the skill or not. Skill only takes you so far, without desire you are nowhere near the player you should or could be.

The desire to play at Tottenham is important.
The desire to play for Mauricio Pochettino is important.
The desire to learn and continually improve is important. (This really needs to be a burning desire)
The desire to play the system, the formation is important.
The desire to be a part of Spurs long-term project is important.
The desire to be a key figure in the club development is important.

Desire is a must. A player must buy into the vision, then he will find his desire.

If a player doesn't totally buy into something then it won't work for them and you don't need them as part of your team. At a football club, you should get shot of players like that quickly as they will drag people down to their level.

It's the same with negative people on social media or those continually posting negative media content.

Negativity is a cancer that should be removed.

Napoleon Hill lists 6 steps to take so I'll list these first and give an idea of how they may be interpreted for Tottenham, but please, for all those anti-levy people who read this, this is higher than money so look at it intelligently and look for how it fits into the picture of winning trophies every season, the biggest trophies, the Premier League and Champions League.

The 6 Steps
  1. Fix the exact amount (or whatever it is) you want in your mind.
  2. Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money (most are not prepared to give enough).
  3. Establish a fixed date for when it shall be yours/happen (no set date will result in failure).
  4. Create a plan and start to act on it immediately regardless of whether you are ready or not.
  5. Write a mission statement of the exact amount, time limit, what you intend to give in exchange and your plan for accomplishing it.
  6. Read your written statement twice per day (morning and evening) and when you do, see and feel yourself having already achieved your goal.

Step 1 is not about money for Spurs, although that is needed to obtain our burning desire objective and along the way win the Premier League and Champions League regularly.

You immediately see here where the club are at odds with fans. There is a different goal already.

The fans goal is more short term than the clubs and yet the club goal is, in the long run, more important and will achieve the fans short term goal to a far greater extent than many can now imagine.

Number two is all about the time, effort, energy, planning, learning new skills, developing, etc you have to do to achieve your goals. Most people, when it comes down to it, are simply not prepared to put in the effort required, they always find something else to do, like playing on social media.

Visualising in the mind's eye for instance, or writing down goals or planning how to achieve them. The masses are not prepared to put that effort in, don't see the point, don't believe it'll make any difference.

They are not prepared to do what it takes, they don't have that winning mentality.

Fans simply see money, spend money. Where the money comes from, how you get it, how much you need, how much your competition have, their circumstances vs your circumstances, none of that comes into their equation, but it has to for the club.

Tottenham set out a plan to qualify for the Champions League to coincide with the opening of the new stadium and as a result of that goal, achieved that step earlier than expected. As we now know, that has had a knock-on effect.

It has increased our revenue, increased our ability to pay higher wages, attract a better standard of player, continue to qualify for the competition and even reach the final.

That plan led to the search for a particular type of manager and getting the decision right was imperative. We did at the second attempt, but finding a Mauricio Pochettino was a part of the plan,it wasn't luck.

We know the ultimate goal, it's the one the fans don't think is possible and thus shouldn't try for, a defeatest attitude if ever there was one. That goal is to rival Real Madrid and Barcelona on and off the pitch.

The latter makes the former possible.

How would you plan out achieving it? Remember the former doesn't achieve the latter, the latter pays for the former and it isn't possible to achieve over just a few years.

There has to be and there obviously is in Spurs' plan both going on at the same time. There is work being done to increase the business off the field and increase revenue that can then be partially reinvested into the playing side.

We saw Spurs try last summer to get high-quality players in the transfer market and failed, we have seen the same approach this summer with success. That comes with increased revenue, we had more buying power, more pull this summer but we didn't sway from the objective and reached a Champions League Final as a result.

Cristiano Ronaldo had a burning desire to improve, Gareth Bale had a burning desire to improve, Harry Kane the same. Does Christian Eriksen possess the same? Does Marcus Edwards possess the same or Josh Onomah?

It isn't in everyone, not the real burning desire or at least it hasn't been found by coaches in everyone. Only you know what motivates you, well that's not actually true, most people don't know what truly motivates them until they are at the point of despair.

Most people never actually look to find what motivates them, money is rarely the true motivating factor, another reason why psychologists should be used by coaches to help unlock each and every player.

Your mind is always suggesting an easier route, a less harmful way, a way with less anxiety. If you see a player hiding in games then there is something missing from his mental makeup.

Desire, it is in us all.
