Tottenham Transfer Talk: Scouting News

Headlines like this are clues to a clubs scouting

I wrote a piece in February, the 6th to be exact (link below), about players Spurs were watching. Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy have since signed two of those this summer and the club scouts are taking a very close interest in a third this season.

Players Being Scouted

So it seems about time for another article on which young players we will be watching this season.

Southend United striker Charlie Kelman has scored 79 goals for Southend’s youth sides and is a potential star in the making.

David Pleat was watching the 17-year-old (18 in November) USA Under-18 goalscorer (1 cap, 1 goal) on 13 August in the League Cup tie where he scored both goals in a 2-1 win.

West Ham United and Brentford are casting their eye over the teenager born in Basildon, so has dual citizenship and will, of course, qualify as homegrown whichever country he plays competitively for at senior level, should that day arise.

Another striker on Spurs radar is Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram. The 22-year-old (23 next August) is a French Under-21 international who made his debut at that level at the Europan Championships earlier in the summer. He is under contract there until 2023.

England Under-19 international, he has 7 caps, Rekeem Harper signed a new contract at WBA this summer until 2022. The 19-year-old (20 next March) central midfielder is a young player we have been monitoring for a while and were briefly linked to over the summer prior to him signing a new contract, as were Celtic.

Talking of Celtic, we were watching Kieran Tierney who went to Arsenal and his replacement is a player we have also been watching, former Bolton Wanderers left-back, 18-year-old (19 next April) Luca Connell.

We will be watching 19-year-old (20 next January) Norwich City right-back Max Aarons every week, be it through a scout at the game or through video analysis. That won't be news to any of you.

It is a similar situation to Ryan Sessegnon. If Norwich get relegated he will no doubt be off and I believe there is a transfer fee cap in his contract if they go down. If they stay up he may want to stay, but how he handles the step up to the Premier League may well define his future. We are very interested in him.

At left-back we have been watching 20-year-old (21 in October) Lloyd Kelly of Bournemouth who brought him from Bristol City, where we were also watching him. Kelly is an England Under-21 international, he has 4 caps and joined the South Coast club this summer for £13.32 million (€14.53m - $16.14m).

Centre-backs Spurs have been watching include 23-year-old (24 next February) Jonathan Tah who has an Ivorian mother and a Geman father. The Bayer Leverkusen defender has played for the German youth sides and now has 6 full international caps for them. He is right-footed and under contract until 2023.

Another is right-footed 20-year-old (21in October) Dayot Upamecano at RB Leipzig in the German Bundesliga. The French Under-21 international centre-back, he has 7 caps, is under contract until 2021.
