A Mental Coach At Last For Spurs

A Mental Coach At Last For Spurs

Bob-Tahri

Regular readers will know I have been calling for the use of sports psychologists or a psychologist as part of our training to improve the mentality of players and give those joining an extra reason to come to Spurs in the first place.

News from France Football suggests we are now tackling that area by approaching Bouabdellah 'Bob' Tahri, the mental coach at Monaco.

Tahri is a retired middle-distance and long-distance runner of Algerian descent, competing internationally for France.

Monaco issued a statement when they employed him saying he was "responsible for the performance, re-training and mental preparation of the professional team." His work included helping injured players mentally and he was a part of their medical team.

All top-level sport is played in the mind, it is the single most important element for any player. With a proper winning mentality, not the mentality most people have, despite what they think, a player will outperform a player with equal skill but not the mentality.

If you don't totally believe and I mean genuinely totally believe you can win then you are at a disadvantage, you can't perform at the very highest level of your potential. Doubt, of any sort, have no place in the mind of a professional athlete.

Doubts are what cause mistakes. When you are right mentally you do everything to improve your game off the field. If Christian Eriksen had a winning mentality he wouldn't have failed to score directly from a free-kick for, how long is it, once in three seasons?

Clearly, he isn't doing enough work on the training ground on it.

That is just an example.

A winning mentality drives you on to do what it takes to improve, it's what drives Harry Kane, it is what drove Gareth Bale and Ronaldo to take their game to a different level.

Tahri is wanted by PSG to work with them but we are trying to beat them to his services after using a mental coach in our preparations for the UEFA Champions League Final.

A mental approach takes time to instill properly and the players have to buy into it and appreciate it's worth. It is just another skillset to improve and something else to offer young players to join Tottenham Hotspur.
