Napoli turn their attention to Aurier
Carlo Ancelotti is taking an interest in Serge Aurier |
According to Sky Sport Italia, a deal for Manchester United’s 28-year-old (29 in December) Italian international full-back Matteo Darmian is proving somewhat difficult. That has prompted Serie A side Napoli to turn to Tottenham Hotspur right-back Serge Aurier.
Aurier only joined Tottenham last summer in a deal worth around £20.45 million (€23m) from Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain. The Ivorian struggled to impose himself in his first season but is looking to push on with a pre-season and the USA tour under his belt.
It is expected that with Danny Rose and Kieran Trippier only returning to training next week that Serge Aurier and Ben Davies will start the season against Newcastle United as the full-backs or wing-backs depending upon the system used.
Having failed to bring in the likes of Youssouf Sabaly, Santiago Arias and Stefan Lainer so far, Elseid Hysaj remains Carlo Ancelotti’s only recognised right-back.
His attempts to sign Aurier are likely to be rebuffed by Spurs, even though Kyle Walker-Peters is developing nicely.

The latter involves starting again with another prospect, although maybe KWP is ready to step up this season too. Certainly Aurier has attributes that are impressive if we can get him past what you rightly suggest is a tendency to give away far too many FKs and pens.
In spite of being a liability in that respect he was a better than average RB IMHO. Remove that from his game and we have what we bought him to be.

KWP (Kyle) certainly looks to be an up and coming RB who looks likely to be playing for England himself after a couple of years. Real potential there. Is he ready to start regularly this season? I'd have to say a big "Probably" actually. Can't be far away. So, maybe Serge has to work hard to get a place.
However, whichever way that works out, an improved Serge Aurier will benefit Spurs. When he came he said he could change and hoped to do so under Poch. I suspect he's already better than when we bought him - even if he's still a liability on too many occasions.
I expect we'll see what pans out, but I doubt we'll let him go just yet. He has improvement left in him and a decent attitude as far as I've seen.
