Spurs phone call haltd Chelsea medical after Everton refused £20m bid

TRANSFER TALK
Back in 2013 Brazilian international Willian had a medical at Tottenham before two Russian bosses colluded, one who needed money after a costly divorce to a chunk of his fortune and who was being chased by the authorities I recall. Willian was instructed to sign for Chelsea.
Move forward four years and Ross Barkley is injured, he can't play football until possibly December or even later. What would be the point of buying him now, when Everton have to pick up his wages during his recovery period and his potential transfer fee goes down in January with just a few months of the season and his contract left.
Everton, who demanded too much money earlier in the window and later on refused to speak with us after turning down our £20 million bid, were stuck with a player they didn't want until Chelsea stepped in and offered them £35 million for him.
So keen was he to leave Everton that he agreed personal terms with them and went for a medical. That is when Spurs did a Willian on them.
While Barkley was undergoing a medical at Chelsea, we made phone calls to ensure him we were going to buy him in January. he agreed a deal with Chelsea because he couldn't be sure we would want him in January, the situation may have changed and we may not have anted him.
We, however, made sure he knew that January was definite. We let him know that Mauricio Pochettino wanted him, that he was our first choice and remained so. He is also deeply unhappy with Everton who refused him his dream move to Spurs.
Armed with the knowledge that he was still going to get his desire to work with Pochettino, whom he feels can turn him into an even better player as he has for other England players, then his decision became easy. Chelsea were no longer an option.
Like Gareth Bale and his desire to join Real Madrid, he wasn't interested in any other team so Ross Barkley isn't interested in any other team if Tottenham want him and are going to buy him. Now he has to recover and wait a few months.

As for jdjd Barkley is at present not good enough to get into the England set up for the world cup and if Everton dig their heels in they he leaves for free next summer anyway. That would really be sensible business for Everton .....NOT
I think you're the only 'stiffy' round ere...
Happy to help, you must be new to this.
COYS!!
As for Barkley, he hasn't stitched up Everton. He's been perfectly up-front with them from the start. It's Everton themselves who've not managed to deal with the business in a professional way, and even the way they have dealt with it, have bungled it badly.
You can blame the player if you like but the whole world knows it's just sour grapes for making such a sad hash of the whole situation.
COYS!!
I'm not sure that that really did happen though!
Fake news ladies and gentleman. Fake news
But did make me chuckle ;)
Spurs might get him in January, he might have recovered from injury by then but he will be very rusty and not match fit, as Everton will not be playing him. He will be a gamble for someone now, whereas if he had been sold someone would have had him in and training. Are you sure Spurs have played this as cleverly as is claimed?
1. Barkley is currently unavailable to play due to injury and operation. This would very likely affect any tribunal fee.
2. Even at £8M he's going to be a lot cheaper than our latest (I believe) offer of £20M.
3. Being injured it's 'very unlikely' we could have had him in and training before January anyway.
4. Currently Everton are paying him while he recuperates.
In view of the above points I think it's clear that Spurs have handled the whole situation intelligently. I suspect we were prepared to take the last point off their hands and pay a premium as we must have decided he's worth that. To be able to pick him up for far less as well as not having to do so until he's further recuperated seems clearly to be a massive advantage.
So, you may say we got lucky to a certain extent, in that Everton have so badly mismanaged the whole situation, but yes - Spurs seem to have handled the whole situation…
I'm not sure recovering from a groin strain is going to affect a tribunal valuation. I certainly don't think it should do.
I accept that Barkley made his intentions clear which put the club in the position of having to deal with the situation. I also accept that trying for £35M was the right thing for them at the time.
However, Barkley, to be fair to the lad, made his position quite clear a long time ago. This put Everton in a position of having to consider how best to handle the situation, but with a fair while for consideration. I suspect most people in football appreciate that players' values drop quite considerably as they near the last year or so of a contract. I don't believe Everton conducted themselves responsibly and seem to have allowed themselves to drift on to a lee shore in this respect.
Certainly go for £35M if you can get it, but for goodness sake have a contingency plan. Maybe even talk to the boy. What we've been hearing (Just grapevine s…
I may be wrong but I'd be surprised if an injury that causes him to miss a large part of his previous season, even if it's not the injury per se but just the fact of missing so much football, didn't result in a much reduced tribunal valuation. Look at how long it's taken Wilshere to recover from his. I don't intend to gloat over his misfortune but he's simply a good example of what happens to many such players after long-term injuries. Coming back is far from easy. It takes a lot of guts and determination in most cases.

All that said - things are looking a lot better for us going forwards. Will it be down to God when we next win the league? Naaaah.
