Should Janssen be looking for a Championship loan spell?

It seems Vincent Janssen only wants to play for a big club according to the Dutch media, which is why he turned down all advances for him, no big clubs wanted him, including ourselves it seems. his next move will be abroad I expect but his £25 million (€27.19m - AUS$40.54m - US$32.31m) asking price may prove a sticking point. Presumably they will all ant a bargain.

If Fernando Llorente produces, and there looks to be no reason why he won't with his experience, then Janssen simply won't get a look in. He won't get on the bench and he won't get the two minutes at the end of a game he has been relying upon.

it's a shame, he has always tried hard, like Roberto Soldado before him. Unfortunately though, he couldn't adapt his game to suit our style amid suggestions that Pochettino doesn't think he is fit enough still.

If we go back to Emmanuel Adebayor, he was left out of the squad and left to rot in a last ditch effort to force him out of the club. It seems we are now going to have the same issue with Janssen. He may get outings in the League Cup to simply give Harry Kane and Fernando Llorente a rest.

It would make sense because if Kane were injured Llorente would be playing a lot of games and he is no spring chicken. As a precaution, Janssen could perhaps play in the Third and Fourth rounds of the competition depending upon who we are drawn against. That is possibly his only hope of game time. We'll have to wait and see.

According to the Stoke Sentinal, their sources at the club say Stoke City did not make a deadline day move for him and were not interested in taking him to the Potteries.

It isn't a nice situation and we are now paying a wage to a player we don't want and perhaps aren't going to use. Would it be a good idea for him to now go on loan to a Championship side until January simply to get some playing time and score a few goals?

  1. He cant go on loan outside of a transfer window. Only way he can go elsewhere is if we terminated his contract and he became a free agent. Not something Levy is going to do.

  2. There seems to be a lot of Spurs fans on twitter who are upset that Janssen hasn't been given more of a chance,and/or that he looks like he is surplus to requirements now. My take on it is that we can't allow him any more chances as he isn't (at this moment) producing anything close to an acceptable level for a top 4 PL club, and we aren't a charity. Harsh as it may be Poch is right to push him out as he just isn't good enough for us. I admire he attitude, tenacity and work rate, but unfortunately we need more than that. I watched Holland twice in the past week and a) Janssen was poor and b) Holland make England look like world champions. It appears that we did indeed buy a striker from a lesser league who just isn't going to cut the mustered.
  3. He'll have to get used to playing with the U23s. Son managed 20 odd goals last year, filling in for Harry when he was injured and coming off of the bench. Janssen is now so far down the pecking order. Wimmer soon found out that if you aren't fit enough, you can't play in a Poch' team. It's now down to Jannsen to roll up his sleeves, work hard on getting fit enough, and bang in so many goals for the U23's that he will force his way into the EFL Cup Team. He'll then need to score goals or prepare to be shipped out in January.

  4. Is it too easy for Spurs to say - he's another Soldado, not going to make it? If it's fitness, then work, on it. If it's adaptability and learning, let's not forget how many loans Kane went out on, without exciting anyone. He looks good in every aspect but in front of goal, which surely comes with confidence and regular games. A loan to Brighton would have been great for him, but either Spurs insisted on an outright sale, either now or later, or his advisors were over worried about how this would look back in Holland, so it didn't happen. The reality is we have him and not playing him at all will only reduce his value to Spurs - so - play him in every league cup game and any other game possible. Put him on the bench for home league games along with Llorente and bring him on with half an hour left when we are comfortably in control of games and don't need Kane or Llorente.

    • That would be a mistake I guess. I know I was very pleased to get him at the time. We were also in a position of having failed to get those players who were higher up on our wish list so were under pressure to get someone in and hope it went well.

      It's easy to criticise in retrospect. I guess we have to accept that mistakes are made and hope that as time goes on such mistakes become more and more rare.

      Let's be clear, we're far from the only club to make such mistakes.

  7. I think we were all thrilled to get VJ as he was top scorer in the Dutch league... I mean how bad could a top scorer be? Also he had been scoring regularly in the lower leagues... I'm sure lots of homework would have gone into scouting him and looking through his games to decide if he's the one... was he under Paul Mitchell's watch - his last act or what? Perhaps that's why we replaced him? I mean scouting players isn't pocket science but there must be something that didn't show up in the forensic analysis of VJ before we jumped in to sign him right?
    • There were many comments even at the time, that strikers from the Dutch league are notoriously unreliable because the pace of their league is so much slower. So, it was seen as a risk, but one we were prepared to take with all the other signs looking so good.

      It's always going to be difficult to get the best people in when it's hard to tell how they're going to fare until they're actually in there doing the business. That's one of the reasons why transfers within the Premiership go for such large amounts.

      Even then things can and do go horribly wrong. Ask Chelsea how happy they were with Fernando Torres. Not cheap. Not effective. Not fun (for Chelsea fans at least ).

      So, another one to put down to experience.

  8. It’s strange that VJ like Soldado, both proven goal scorers, spent much of their time with their backs to goal…so did HK at first ’til he realised that ‘selfishness’ is one of the prime attributes of a striker.
    So, did their lack of playing time influence the way they played?
    It will be interesting to see how Llorente behaves…two’s a coincidence, three’s a pattern…
  9. I see Poch has gone with the UEFA squad numbers excuse, which quite frankly, fools nobody.
    They f***** up the numbers beforehand (and maybe that was the real reason for DL's reported outburst) or maybe Poch thought that the chance to get Llorente was too good to miss and then realised after the event that VJ would be surplus to requirements vis a vis the CL.
