Berahino, Townsend, Fazio

In many a fans world you simply pay what a selling club ask, of course that is no way to conduct a successful business. Buy low, sell high is a maxim that is not exempt from football.

It's all a part of negotiation, you both have a starting point, one side has a figure they won't go below, one side has a figure they won't go above. There are many more variables but that is the basics. Three transfers at the moment highlight these negotiations. Saido Berahino, Federico Fazio and Andros Townsend.

WBA seem to be demanding £23-million for Berahino, we don't think he is worth that much so unless they come down to what we consider a more realistic level given the length of his contract, then there won't be a deal. He may well be cheaper for other clubs with their chairman having to save face. I doubt very much that Berahino is going to be happy though if we sign someone else.

Andros Townsend puts the shoe on the other foot, we are demanding £14-million, which is rather high, however Newcastle United have to get themselves out of a relegation mess so ITK is suggesting they are willing now to stump up the full asking price. There need is so great they will pay over the top, they have tried putting in an offer and suggesting they won't pay over £10-million for him, but relegation will cost them dear so needs must.

Rederico Fazio is a player we no longer use and sevilla want him back. We read previously all the rubbish from press and fans who say the Spanish club will never deal with us again. Why do people write such garbage, business is businness, personal feelings have no place in it. We have someone they want so they are dealing with us.

Naturally they want him on the cheap, naturally we want to maximise our return. They want a loan, we don't, they want a low price, we don't. There has been plenty of talk of a quick deal but the window doesn't shut until the end of January so Sevilla may well wait until the very end as they feel we have to sell and it would therefore be for a lower price than we want.

There is no guarantee Sevilla will increase their offer to an acceptable level to us and no guarantee will will lower our valuation to a level aceptable to them. They sit sixth in La Liga, a way off the Champions League places, thanks largely to their away form where they haven't won a single game yet. Do they see Fazio as a priority or would they be prepared to wait until the summer?

We are in a position where we would like to sell but are not desperate to do so, we are not holding up signing a centre-back because we can't sell him so we don't have an incentive to reduce his price much right now. It is another of those games of chicken that are so often played during transfer markets.

I suspect WBA will not lower Berahino's price to a realistic level and we will sign someon else, that we will eventially find an acceptable fee with Sevilla for Fazio, while getting more than we should for Townsend.
