Watford want Adebayor

Newly promoted Watford want to snap up out of favour Spurs players and have made a proposal to Emmanuel Adebayor.

Adebayor is being paid an agreed figure by Spurs in lump sum stage payments and has a clause in his agreement not to speak about his time at the club. He can not join a Premier League side until January and with the sacking of Tim Sherwood his expected return there will now almost certainly not happen. The Aston Villa hierarchy were not keen on Adebayor joining, the driving force was Sherwood, but with him gone that avenue may well have closed now.

Watford, who only have 4 Englishmen in their squad, signed Etienne Capoue, tried to sign Benjamin Stambouli, Andros Townsend and Aaron Lennon in the summer and also now have Huerelho Gomes our former keeper.

Adebayor is believed to want to continue his career in the Premier League and has turned down an offer from Turkish side Besiktas. That would seem to rule out Italians sides who have already baulked at his £100,000-a-week salary demands, though you would expect them to have reduced now. It would also seem to rule out the MLS and Qatar, two previously mooted destinations.

Fitness will be an issue for anyone signing him in January. If he has to spend a month getting fit his usefulness until the end of the season diminishes. West Han United have refused to allow him t train with them and since trying to sign him have realised the trouble he brings.

There will be many clubs who will happily take a chance on him, but wages are always going to be a problem. Watford have made him an offer, Alan Pardew has tried to sign him before as has Tony Pulis so Crystal Palace and WBA will no doubt be interested. Chelsea seem to take on troubled players to sit on the bench and play occasionally so it wouldn't be a shock to me if they made an offer.

Stoke City will no doubt make enquiries as will Sunderland. Adebayor has always turned down any club in the bottom half believing he should be playing for stronger clubs. How many are prepared to take a chance on him given his antics at Manchester City and Tottenham we will have to wait and see.

Watford though have made a move on the proviso he proves his fitness. It seems unlikely.
