Vertonghen - We feel confident

Jan Vertonghen plays down the role he and Toby Alderweireld play at the heart of an improved Spurs defence. What he says is true, defending is a team game, everyone has to do their piece or the jigsaw doesn't fit together.
It is also true though that Vertonghen looks much happier with Alderweireld alongside him and has returned to the level he showed when he first joined us. That improvement has coincided with an improved defensive record, currently the joint best in the Premier League, who would have thought that after last season.

“Everyone puts so much effort in so we don’t have much to do most of the time - I have to give a compliment to the guys around us.
“At the moment we feel confident as centre-backs with the full-backs around us. I think Hugo is having a good season so we feel good.”
Last season was the first season the players had been playing the system, they were not experienced experts at it, they were learning as they go. Playing twice a week there is no time to work on improving an area in an intense fashion, if you did you would be neglecting other areas.
Pre-season was key in working as a unit defensively so players know what their and others role is within the defensive system. The defenders get credit, the centre-backs get credit, in truth they all deserve credit, they are all involved.
