Premier League more important and mentally tough

Tottenham take on Monaco this evening at 6pm in the Stade Louis II as part of th group stages of the UEFA Europa League. During the build up Mauricio Pochettino had the press laughing at the pre-match press conference with his movie reference.
He went on to reveal the difference between the Premier League and other leagues around Europe and how the players themselves see each competition.
“We have a problem, Houston.
“I think that it is not easy and there is a lot of opinion about why for the players the Premier League is the most important competition in the word, for the supporters the same, for the media.
“Some players play in the Europa League and Champions League and when not selected to play in the Premier League and you say ‘why? It is a big, big issue’.
“I think the Premier League is a very tough competition, not only physically but mentally very tough.
“I was in France and Spain, and managed in Spain too, and the Europa League and Champions League for European teams is treated like a priority so sometimes they rest players in the domestic competition.
“For England it is opposite, it is different. Maybe this is one reason, I don’t know.
“It is true we need to assess, analyse and try to know why because it is true for the future it is important to fix that because we need to compete better in Europe.”
The other main point to come out of his interview was the confirmation that the Premier League is a tough league mentally on players. No surprise to readers of this blog of course or the majority of supporters, but even then most probably don't fully understand how big a part the mental side plays for top level sportsmen and women, including, or more probably, especially football.
