Versatility giving Spurs a more balanced look

Nervous Spurs fams were up in arms with a knee-jerk reaction to Saido Berahino not signing, all at the club will have known that was a possibility and discussed what to do if that looked like being the case, clearly the decision was to stick with what we have.

Son Heung-min has already shown he can play anywhere across the front, Dele Alli fills different midfield roles with equal aplomb, Eric Dier was a good right-back last season, can play centre-back and is excelling in a defensive midfield role and Toby Alderweireld plays right-back for Belgium as well as being able to play defensive midfield.

Mauricio Pochettino has told the press before that he likes versatile players and we have certainly been signing them. Instead of having rigid players for a rigid role we have the flexibility to move players to different roles where they can do an excellent job.

Son Heung-min has calmed those assuming Harry Kane was our only striker. Pochettino will have known the situation over Berahino and it will have been he who decided not to sign anyone else, it was widely reported that he had the final say, which is no change from previous head coaches anyway.

Alan Smith was voicing concerns that an inexperienced Alli, having been moved back from an attacking midfield role to a defensive one, wouldn't be able to cope with the responsibility element the role required. Gooner Smith was way off the mark and Alli demonstrated he maturity with an eye-catching display.

With Mousa Dembele and Christian Eriksen among others also able to play in several positions. our squad looks more balanced than it has for a while. Future transfer windows will see the striker situation improved further and perhaps a defensive midfielder brought in if Carroll doesn't prove his worth.

Having a goal threat from the front four positions is vital to maximise the pressure on the opposition. If we can score a goal from either side then we give the defence more to think about and the more decisions they have to make the greater likelihood of making a mistake, from which we must pounce with clinical efficiency.

We now look as though we have that threat thanks to the versatility of the players we have at our disposal. It would be nice now to see Njie start the League Cup game and get his name on the scoresheet, he looks a little way off and with some improving to do from two brief substitute appearances, which can be misleading.
