Press call for Dier, Alli, Kane, Townsend for England

If the press has their way the England team will be full of young English Spurs players, first it was a clamour for Andros Townsend, then it was Harry Kane, now they are signing the praises of Dele Alli and Eric Dier, both of whom are turning out consistent performances that catch the eye.

It's a difference between the good the talented player and the talented player who is going to be a top-four player, the ability to fulfil the team function, but still be able to shine as an individual. The coach gets the best of both worlds, the graft and the skill.

If you can't make your own mark the way Bentaleb, Mason, Dier, Alli have done then you are going to fade away. Andros Townsend produced a nice cameo the other week when he came on, that has to be backed up by a midweek performance then again and again. Harry Kane did it last season, Eric Dier is doing it this season.

It separates him from a player like Tom Carroll who has yet to stamp his authority on a game, Dele Alli has managed it and he is only 19 and stepping up two divisions from League One. Excuses aren't going to help those who haven't performed as they need to yet. With each passing game, their task becomes harder as the players ahead of them cement their places in the pecking order.

We have Dier, Alli, Mason and Bentaleb, when they are all fit, will be competing for two places, if a player like Carroll is to muscle his way in there then he needs to be performing and catching the eye when they are injured and he has an opportunity.

You either hide behind excuses or you perform, that's the cutthroat world of football and the way they have to be judged. If you see something and feel the player can be developed, that his inner self may be coaxed out to reveal the underlying talent you persevere, Lamela is perhaps a case in point there, the talent was there, it was just a question of getting it out of him.

Will we eventually see an England team with Townsend, Kane, Dier, Alli and Walker is it, perhaps Rose will work his way into the picture as well, a far cry from nobody at the World Cup, no wonder England flopped again.
