Lloris and Vertonghen the Daddies
3 min read
I have to admit when I was promoting putting together a young team, a young squad who could all grow together, learn a system together and develop into a top side together, the average age is not something I had considered.
In the Premier League this season, as you know, we have been putting out the youngest average aged side. Spurs' starting XI had the youngest average age of any team in a Premier League game so far in 2015/16 (24y 118d).
Lloris and Vertonghen are the Daddies of this team, but Walker is no slouch in the experience stakes having come through early. Alderweireld and Chadli have international experience as does Son. Vorm (31), Fazio (28) and Dembele (28) add a bit more. There is experience in the team, just not all of it in the Premier League.
Perhaps it is the average age and the potential for the future that is exciting the Spurs supporter right now, our team looks like being this sort of age all season, there won't be too many where we put out all the 'old guard'.
We have now lost just one of our last eight Premier League games (W4 D3 L1) and had 22 shots (inc. blocked), the most in a PL game since 22 Feb vs West Ham (27).
Not bad for a side apparently going backwards. There have been many cries to back a manager and allow him to shape a squad in the manner of his choosing, now that is being done there are still the same dissenting voices not wanting to give it time to work, rather demonstrates they don't actually want anything to work.
Alan Pardew: "Spurs have some outstanding players. I'm a big fan of Kane, Chadli and Eriksen.
"They will definitely finish in the top ten. I can cope with winning 3-2, 4-3, 5-4. The bottom line is I want this team to think about scoring goals.
"The players are smiley and happy. We're going to go out and try to take the game to Spurs."
Those words kind of backfired with the young Tottenham side dominating the game from start to finish really against a side who had won eight of their last ten on the road. We have the trivial matter of Arsenal in the League Cup where we will surely play a similar side to the Europa League team before a big match against Manchester City.
There will be the usual ups and downs, Manchester City though, does not fill me with the trepidation is did a couple of seasons ago, now it's a feeling of actually being able to win, whether we will or not is another matter. Fingers crossed.
Further Tottenham Reading
Further Lamela encouragement
An encouraging beginning from Son Heung-min
Player Reaction to Palace Win - Alli, Lamela, Chadli, Eriksen, Mason, Soldado, Clemence, Davies and more
Success is only a light switch away
Critical thinking improves Spurs
