Ever on the look out for reinforcements, whether for now or to develop for the future Tottenham had a scout in France at the weekend watching a Moroccan midfielder.
The game was on Sunday in Ligue 1 between Lille and Bordeaux which finished 0-0 and the player interesting us is 21-year-old (22 in September) Franco-Moroccan attacking midfielder Sofiane Boufal.
He joined Lille in January for £2.10-million from Angers, newly promoted to Ligue 1 this season after 21 years in the second division. His contract runs until 2019 and looks like a player we are going to be following the progress of regularly this season.
He is listed as right-footed, but is in fact two-footed which no doubt helps him play on either wing, but it is primarily as a central attacking midfielder behind a lone striker he has been playing. That said, two of the three games this season have seen him start on the right. Last season he played in 14 Ligue 1 games scoring 3 goals with 6 assists. Minutes wise he played 1,014 equivalent to 11.27 games, a goal every 338 minutes and a direct hand in a goal every 112.67 minutes.
In the games he started he was on the left 2 times, central 5 times (1 goal, 3 assists) and played centre-forward in 4 games (2 goals, 3 assists). Whilst some players struggle when switched positions his two-footedness seems to allow him to take it all in his stride. Before Lille bought him he was one of the most sought after players in Ligue 2.
One goal for Augers before he joined Lille was outstanding, he cut in from the left, beat 5 men before a powerful strike into the hit. Such skill marks him out as an exciting prospect in France, which hasn't gone unnoticed in Europe, Juventus, AC Milan (both Italy), Newcastle United, Granada (Spain) and Marseille are sides known to be interested in his progress as well as the major Portuguese clubs.
He clearly has dribbling ability to which he adds a pace and determination that has seem him get close to an international call up to join Nabil Bentaleb in the Moroccan squad.
